Is it just me, or does the dictionary app's definition of "lead" not include the metal of that name? (It defines other elements, such as gold and uranium).
On my machine, there is a lead (2), noun, 1 a heavy, bluish-gray, soft, ductile metal,.....

You're right - I hadn't scrolled all the way down past the phrases, etymology etc.
I wasn't accounting for the fact that it gives two sets of definitions depending on the pronunciation.
