An unexpected error has occurred. Please quit and reopen Keynote.

Have a user at work that's been having this message for the last week or two on his iMac.

I've repaired permissions to no avail. I've deleted all trace of iWork, emptied the trash, re-booted and re-installed - same problem.

I've tried creating a new admin account on the machine and trying again - same error.

I've update Keynote to the latest version (9.0.5).

Run out of ideas now. Any suggestions? Seems to be other people on here with the same problem but no answers.

Thanks

Steve

Is this just a problem when opening previously made Keynote presentation or do you get this when just opening Keynote to make a new presentation?

When you say you deleted all traces of iWork, what all did you get?

Was there any new software added to the computer in question just before the problem started with Keynote?

What Mac OS system are you using and is it all up to date?

A few more details might help find the problem.

The message appears when launching Keynote ANY way.

I deleted the iWork folder from the Applications folder and I deleted every plist file I could find that had iWork in the title.

As far as I can tell, no new software has been "added" to the machine prior to the issue but as I said, this isn't my machine so I don't know for sure what's been going on with it.

Operating system is 10.6.7 and has all updates applied.

I tried removing iWork with AppZapper and re-installing without applying the 9.0.5 update and this time, none of the iWork apps work.

Here's the error I got in Pages...

It was a similar error for Numbers and Keynote but unfortunately the specific errors for those two apps aren't with e right now..

I install the 9.0.5 update and I get the original "An unexpected error has occurred. Please quit and reopen Keynote." error.

Yvan Koenig has written an Apple Script that will totally remove the iWorks app and then you can try to reinstall. You can find it in his public folder https://public.me.com/koenigyvan then For iWorks>iWorks '09>uninstall iWorks '09.zip.

I believe that folder that you missed uninstalling in in the Macintosh HD>Library>Application Support and titled iWorks '09. But I would just use Yvan's script to make sure everything is gone, then try reinstalling and see what happens and let us know.

Jun 3, 2011 2:18 AM in response to Kelly Coull

Okay, I ran the script. Booted into safe boot. repaired permissions. Re-installed iWork and it's working!

Weirdly, some part of this process deleted all the Apple Standard Desktop Pictures from /Library/Desktop Pictures. Recovered them from another machine but be interested in theories of why that happened.

Aside from that the user is very happy.

Thanks for your help!

Jul 12, 2012 9:35 PM in response to Kelly Coull

Apple has closed the .me service so Yvan's script is no longer available.

I couldn't find it anywhere else by googling.

I moved the aplication Support/iWorks folder manually and removed other iWorks related files using AppCleaner.

Still no good after multiple attempts to do a new install from the iWorks09 DVD.: keep getting Keynote to “unexpectedly” quit. Pages and Numbers are OK though. (Keynote itself had worked fine for 3 years then just decided to “unexpectedly” quit all the time.

Any suggestions?
