Exporting clips for Powerpoint

I'm trying to export clips to use in a Powerpoint presentation which I thought would be relatively straightforward to do but I'm having trouble with the whole exporting thing..!

Could anybody guide me on what I need to be exporting the clips as because when I tried it the first time and took the files over on a cd to the PC, it didnt recognise them. Do I export from just Quicktime or should I be doing the Quicktime conversion? And do I need to have a certain type of Quicktime Player available on my PC or can it be played from my Windows Media Player?

Any help would be much appreciated!

If you export a QuickTime movie, the PC must have QuickTime player installed.

Best option for playback in Powerpoint on a PC is to export a AVI file. Use DV-PAL or Cinepak. DV-PAL is best.
Make shure the created file has a .avi extension.

Finaly, test the file in Powerpoint on the PC.

I would export the clips and transcode them to an MPEG1. If you go AVI (which BTW is not bad) you will have A. larger file size than MPEG1 & B. gambling whether or not the correct codec is installed on the computer playing back the PP presentation.

thanks for your suggestions. I do have QuickTime installed on my PC and so far I have tried to export them as avi files but when I put it on the PC, an error came up saying 'a codec is required to play this file' (on Windows Media Player). I've just been reading up on some stuff about codecs and file formats on the web and manual but it's a little confusing..!

how would I transcode them to MPEG-1? Also, when the WMP failed to play the clip I tried to open it with the QuickTime Player - it came up but the image quality was quite reduced and there didnt appear to be any sound..is there something else I should be doing with my video sequences before I export them?

thanks again for your help! you might be able to tell I'm pretty new to all of this!

I've dealt with Powerpoint before and had huge headaches with every format I tried (partially due to the clients' aversion to updating software). That project was what finally drove me to buy Flip4Mac ( http://flip4mac.com/wmv.htm). I wish I had plunked down for it earlier. It would have prevented lots of render time and frustrated phone calls from unhappy people.

You can use Compressor to output an MPEG1...you will not run into codec problems on the PC side that way. Flip4Mac (as suggested) is a nice piece of software to have in your arsenal...you can output WMVs with that. You know the Windows boxes will like any file with "windows" actually in the name! 🙂
