how can I edit the spelling dictionary?
Is there a way to access the main dictionary and edit it----not the words I have added, but the original dictionary?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

All located in /Library/Dictionaries/. Pick the one you want to muck with and CONTROL-click on it and Show Package Contents. Have at it, but I strongly suggest only working on a copy.

That is for Dictionary.app. I think the OP wants to edit the main spell-checking dictionary, which is different.
If so, then I'm at a loss as to where that might reside. The various apps within /System/Library/Input Methods/ have some dictionaries, but most appear to be related to foreign languages.

I don't know either. Perhaps a google search of developer.apple.com on spelling or something like that would uncover the secret location...
/System/Library/Services/AppleSpell.service/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/bin dict
and others in the same folder. Good luck editing those -- they're hash tables.
Can you explain what you're trying to do? Maybe there is a solution. For example, the International control panel allows you to switch between UK and US spellings.
Sam makes a good point. If there is something you don't like about the Apple dictionary, you can use others, either from the internal supply or by downloading from this site:

and

Nice find, but not for the faint of heart to muck with.đ
Thanks to all for information and suggestions.
Iâve been collecting oddities that pop up in the spelling checker, from non-words to systemic errors, and wanted to scan part of its list. Sounds as though that is not possible.
As an example of a systemic error, re-hgb and re-iwx are accepted as words, by virtue of the âre-â prefix which apparently confers worddity upon anything it becomes part of.
