Q: MacBook Pro (mid-2010) Blacks-Out

My MacBook Pro is only a little over a year old and I'm beginning to experience a system lock-up several times a day. I've done a hardware diagnostics from the Mac OS X install disc (everything was fine it said), I've tried verifying and repairing the SSD harddisk, I've reset PRAM, NVRAM and SMC, none of it has worked. It doesn't occur on a regular timely basis, often times it seems like it went to sleep but just cannot wake up again — the keys are lit, but pressing any key or using the track-pad which should wake the computer doesn't work, it stays black. I've also tried closing the lid on the computer to see if it would wake when I opened it again, still nothing happens.

Help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Same problem here!  I have the sam model MacBook Pro and I'm experiencing exactly what you are describing.

I have also tried the solutions you mention such as resetting PRAM.  I've run disk utility too.

I spent some time searching for answers yesterday and came up empty.

Let's hope someone has figured out this one- or that a patch of some sort is on the way!

There must be more folks out there with the same problem....

It's nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing this issue, I sure hope this is a software bug and not a hardware-related issue, the warranty only just ran out!

I might have found the problem – try to remove any saved networks in your Wi-Fi configuration that you don't use all that often.

I haven't seen the problem since I did – only my home network is in my list of saved networks now.

Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

Might be a good idea to run the Apple Hardware Test

There is, haven't been under 15%.

Hardware test turns up no failures, even the extended test.

That rules that out. If you haven't run the AHT from your install disc, try that.

Did this, no failures — even with extended test.

I'm having the same problem here. Called apple support, not much help offered. Did all the resets and it didn't help. Worse of all, I brought it to one of apple's retail store and they had a look at it over a week and they told me that they couldn't find the fault. =(

Having blackouts on a daily basis. Nothing works after the screen blacks out but I'm sure the hardware's still running and the computer's still on.

Any idea what to do now?

I ended up getting my logic board replaced and haven't had any problems since.

The first time I took it to the Genius Bar, they looked it over, and suggested re-installing the OS.  After I did that, the issue still existed, so I took it back.  This time, they replaced the logic board and I had it back in two days, shipped to my house.

Did the Genius Bar go into your Console and check the errors?  The guys seemed very intrigued by what they were seeing in mine.

I'm in New Zealand. They even charged me 70 bucks to have their technician to exam it. But I wasn't satisfied with what they did. I might just have to bring it back to them demanding for a logic board replaced? I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the firmware because I updated it to a 10.6.8 about a month ago. I'm just very frustrated the fact that they didn't do their best on fixing it. They had it for a week but only examined it for less than an hour in total. haih

OS updates, like 10.6.8, isn't the same as a firmware update — firmware is device/hardware specific.

An update from me; I've turned my MacBook Pro in for repair, its current status is 'awaiting parts', I'm assuming this means they've identified the problem and will replace the malfunctioning hardware — can't say at this point which hardware parts are being replaced nor can I specify the source of the problem, sorry.

I will post when I know more.

I'm currently downloading 10.6.8 update combo. Hope it'll help. Not sure if its a hardware or software issue. Hopefully its not the logic board. Technicians here were not very helpful, and this problem's killing me. Even if I bring it back to them again, they might just charge me another 70 dollars and tell me that they can't do anything about it. =(

I just Got my MacBook Pro back from service, the problem is due to a faulty logicboard — they've replaced it and Told me the problem wasn't replicable after it had been replaced. If at all I start experiencing the issue again I will of course report it on this thread again.

I have the same problem, MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010, the display turns black suddenly, and the computer is still on. Always, the only way to deal with it is forcing it to quit by using the power button as it is unresponsive. I have tried changing the power savings feature in different ways, fixing persmissions, diskwarrior, disk utility...resetting the SMC...it happens all the time, I can not find a pattern. It just happens randomly. The only thing left to try is to reinstall the system...will try that.
