Q: MacBook Pro (mid-2010) Blacks-Out

My MacBook Pro is only a little over a year old and I'm beginning to experience a system lock-up several times a day. I've done a hardware diagnostics from the Mac OS X install disc (everything was fine it said), I've tried verifying and repairing the SSD harddisk, I've reset PRAM, NVRAM and SMC, none of it has worked. It doesn't occur on a regular timely basis, often times it seems like it went to sleep but just cannot wake up again — the keys are lit, but pressing any key or using the track-pad which should wake the computer doesn't work, it stays black. I've also tried closing the lid on the computer to see if it would wake when I opened it again, still nothing happens.

Help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It is the logicboard — have it replaced by Apple.

Casper is right on.  I had the same problem and Apple replaced my logic board.  Everything runs fine since.

This seems a bit bizarre.  My 15" Macbook pro is a spare and was very rarely used.

Mostly it sat in a network room and if I needed serial access I would turn it on and connect remotely.

If it is truly a logic board failure why would none of the tests show up failing for people who have run diagnostics on it.

If Apple knows what the issue is it would save them a lot of headache if they would just own it, so all of us thinking about the upgrade don't sit here wondering what we should do and what the fallout is after install.

Had this exact problem Macbook Pro i7 15" mid 2010. Took it to apple Advised clean install. Showed up with no problems what so ever on their scanners. After moaning that ran a stress program and straight awa it "blacked-out" They replaced the Logic Board and Display. Now it's all fixed! Oh wait, no, it doesn't sleep anymore...

But in short. Take it in

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 320gb mid 2010 which was purchased on 7 December 2010 and last week I took it to the Apple store (18 miles away) as I was having the same problems as you and they had to replace the Logic board. I am very unhappy that this has happened after just 8 months of very light usage and I made this clear to the Apple people who said it was very unusual for this to go but a search of the internet shows the opposite. The bill for the replacement Logic board & labour charge came to £349 which was covered by the 1 year guarantee so I didn't have to pay but I now understand why the Apple people are so keen to get you to buy their Applecare extended warranty.

I have the similar problem, too.  I have a late 2010 MBP 15" and all at a sudden, the screen randomly turns black or off.  I need to type my login password to get screen working again.  This is no danger but very incovenience to me.

However, once I had installed the latest OS X Mountain Lion operating system, this problem just disappeared and now I become a happy guy again loving my MPB 15"!!!  For USD20 only, it is worth a try!!!  Good luck!!!

I have the same issue. I took my mbp to apple store. I was told  there that all mid 2010 logic ports are faulty. they ordered a logic board to replace it. hopefully it will stop the issue happening anymore because that is really annoying.

Only solution was to change the logic board. End of the problem.

I understand that the logic boards are bad, but being that mine is out of warranty will I have to pay for replacement of the logic board? $400 is not something I can afford currently.

I'm not sure, they did except that it was their fault and they all needed replacing. It worth booking it in to ask.

Had my logic board replaced in early 2011. Never had a problem since it was done. Even got a new screen out of it as the broke it opening the case.

Since so many of the mid2010 had this problem I would take it to the genius bar and insist on getting it changed by Apple.

I am not convinved that this is a hardware problem.

    I have a MB Air 13' Late 2010 and a MB Pro 13" mid 2012, both with OS 10.7.5.

On the same day, within 10 minutes, my MBPro had a black screen problem, 2 times, that lasted for  several minutes each time, so I switch to the MB Air, and then it have the same problem!

I can't recall having this problem before.

It beggars belief that that I could get simultaneous hardware glitches in separate machines.
