Why can't I open .zip files?

It seems any time I attempt to download .zip or .dmg files the Archive Utility agent is unable to properly decompress said files. Once the download is complete and I attempt to open the .zip file, an error message pops up: "Error 01: Operation Not Permitted". I've tried resetting Safari/emptying the cache and made sure I was allowed to read and write files, but I still receive the same error message. I've had my Macbook Pro for about three months now, am unsure what to do next.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Launch the Console application and enter "archive" (without the quotes) in the search box. Try to unzip a file. Post any messages that appear in the Console window.

I attempted to download StuffIt; it downloaded just fine, but upon opening it there was an error message saying "image data corrupted." In the console, I typed in "archive" and it gave me this: "ditto: Cyberduck.app/Contents/Resources/sv.lproj/Preferences.nib: No such file or directory"; another message said "couldn't read pkzip signature."

It sounds like your downloads are all being corrupted somehow. Do you have any other computers on the same network?

I do, and they're both Macbook Pros. I checked the strength of my network signal and it's functioning properly, so, I'm going to try another computer in the household and see what happens. If it's the same issue, it might be the wireless router.
