canon scanner won't work with new 27"

I have a new Sandybridge (Thunderbolt ports) 27" iMac with a 3.1 GHz I5 CPU. Now my trusty Canon LIDE 100 USB scanner driver no longer works (just on the new iMac - the scanner works perfectly on the 24" iMac now handed down to my youngest son and also with my wife's Intel iBook). It seems to be an issue specific to the new motherboard chipset design of the brand new iMac. Anybody else have this issue and has anybody discovered a workaround so far?

First, make sure you've installed the latest drivers:

http://support.apple.com/kb/dl899

And make sure the other software and firmware is up to date:

I had already updated with the latest Canon drivers but no joy. However the Apple supplied Canon drivers at least now get the scanner to be usable with Image Capture. (The scanner was always visible in System Profiler under the USB tree, but not visible to Image Capture before installing the April 2011 Apple supplied Canon driver update.) Thanks for the link!

I had already installed the latest Canon software and drivers, but no joy still. And Image Capture did not see my scanner at first. However after installing the Apple Cannon driver update from April of 2011 at least Image Capture now does see and allow scans with my Canon scanner. It was always visible in System Profiler under the USB tree, but before installing the latest Apple supplied Canon drivers Image Capture could not see it.

So even though the Canon software still tells me "The scanner driver supported by this software is not installed. Install it and then retry.", I can at least use Image Capture as a workaround.

The missing driver issue hit me too, and I eventually contacted Canon who were very helpful.

I have a different scanner, so your mileage may vary, but it turned out that the software under the 10.6 link is not the correct version.

You should look under the generic Mac OS X link.

In my next post, I'll paste the instructions they gave me. They will no doubt refer to filenames that are not relevant to you, but the overall process may help you.

Canon was able to get it working by having me uninstall a stale TWAIN driver and then reinstalling the latest OS X 10.6 drivers for this scanner. I got excellent email support from Canon on this, responding quickly and accurately to my request for help and effectively troubleshooting the problem. So now I can both scan from Image Capture and with the Canon software tools (Solution Menu and MP Navigator) with my new iMac. My LiDE 100 scanner works like a champ again!
