Cruiseline says safari not compatible with ships wifi how can I use my ipad 2

I have read comments by passengers saying that other browsers may work but no suggestions. The cruise line suggests firefox but I guess they are not aware that you cannot put it on an ipad. Any ideas??????????

1. Celebrity Cruise Lines offers an iPhone/iPod Touch app with deck plans of all their ships, detailed information on their trips, itineraries, etc. Simply search the App Store for Celebrity Cruises. Why they would cater to iPhone/iPod Touch users for that, but then exclude them from wi-fi, I cannot imagine, and strongly believe it would work perfectly regardless.

Well having just returned from a great two week cruise on Celebrity's Constellation, I can say my new iPod Touch worked like a champ! Much faster then the on board lab computers, so it actually saved me money. Price is high for wifi, about $5.95 per minute. They do have packages for discounts. Did not need to change a thing on the iPod, simply pay the money and get to the "hot spots" and if was wonderful. The ships system worked well all around the Caribbean. So no problems and thanks for the comments. I will say the literature from Celebrity was not as clear as it might have been at least for me.

Many of the cruise lines use a "portal" system that runs a browser plug-in or Java or Flash app so that they can keep track of your total usage for billing purposes. (On-board internet usage is usually not free and can be quite pricey. Sometimes it's free or cheaper when the ship is in port.) So the plug-in might not be compatible with Safari. (Which means it almost certainly would not compatible with the iPad.) If the info you're getting is from some printed brochures or the cruise line's website, the info may be out of date. So you may need to call the cruise line and ask specifically about using your iPad or whatever devices you decide to take. The customer support rep on the phone still may not know the technicals so don't be surprised if you get the same answer. But hopefully you get to someone knowledgable.

As I mentioned before, often shipboard internet is quite pricey. The last cruise I was on was something like $0.50 per minute PLUS additional setup fees. I was using a Windows Mobile smartphone and the ship's portal plug in was not compatible with Windows Mobile. So my choices were either wait until the ship got to port, when I then could use my phone's 3G, or use one of the computers at the "internet cafes" onboard, which still weren't free either. (I basically went "offline" for the entire trip, which made for a convinient excuse as to why I didn't reply to all the messages from work. 😉 )
