Why does my update download restart after pause or internet disconnet?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

it restarts because when your internet disconnects, the update file is not complete and therefore unable to used, resulting in a redownload

There are many reasons why you might want to pause a 3 hour download. Like doing other things with your internet connection for instance. You can pause app and music downloads, why not much larger files? Every other download helper from other vendors has this functionality and ITunes already does this for other files. Its hugely frustrating having waited 2 hours and a home internet wobble reseting entire download. As for the suggestion of going round to someone else's house to download - haha - this is a digital, online service and I don't know why Apple doesn't do resumable downloads for their massive updates.
