hhardi1, your battery status indicates the battery is bad and this is why it says to check battery in the condition field. Batteries do go bad after so many uses and even after not using the battery for so long. If your Mac is still under warranty, they may replace the battery or you can buy a new one on eBay or through the Apple store.

Had the same problem....it was either "not charging" or the "X" in the battery icon. I tried everything humanly possible short of taking it to an apple store (the battery was new from a previous repair). Then, I caught a youtube video of a guy explaining how he did the SMC reset, but in a different order. Turn off macbook, disconnect magsafe, remove battery, press and hold power button 5 seconds, plug in magsafe plug BEFORE reinstalling the battery, install battery, and power up. After researching countless different ways to solve this issue, this one WORKED! My magsafe is orange, and my battery is charging (it's at 39% as I'm writing this). Don't know if this will work for everyone, but it's worth a shot!

Hi, Stefanie. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Have you tried a different outlet? Sometimes an outlet goes bad, and it isn't a problem with the MacBook at all and people don't think to check that out.

If the outlet checks out okay, do you know someone with whom you could swap charging adapters and batteries, first one and then the other, to determine which may be at fault?

If you don't know anyone, then you're going to have to take it in for an evaluation.
