why does my keyboard and mouse freeze up, this has been happening since I increased memory and upgraded to Snow Leopard

Since I increased memory and upgraded to Snow Leopard my keyboard and mouse freeze up when computer is idle for awhile.

Once I unplug the usb and plug it back in it works. Seems to make no difference which port I plug into, does on all of them.

Any ideas why this is happening, bad usb port? bad keyboard & mouse? Sometimes I unplug the keyboard to use with a windows laptop as I prefer the keyboard to the laptop keyboard. Would this have caused the problem with my keyboard?

Is this your Mac:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_cd_1.83_17_ig.html

And, is this the RAM you got:

RAM Type:PC2-5300 DDR2Min. RAM Speed:667 MHz

Even if it is the correct specs, it could still be a defective RAM module; also, iMacs are known to be extremely finicky about their RAM; i.e. OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial are generally recommended here - Kingston (especially their and an other Value brand line) are not. So, have you checked your RAM status? Go to Apple in menu, click on about this Mac, click on more info, click on Memory and see that the modules show "ok" and please post back with that.

Secondly, the keyboard issue could also be a USB port issue - I had that problem on a previous (white) iMac - I kept plugging in/unplugging. The problem here is that the USB ports are an integral part of the logic board which means a rather expensive repair/replacement. So, once we've eliminated the RAM as a culprit and considering the age of the Mac, you might want to make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation and diagnosis. You can then make a decision. In my case, I was covered by Applecare, so the logic board was replaced free of charge.

Thanks for the reply

Yes that is my Mac

Memory was purchased from Crucial; I let the memory tool show me what I needed.

Checked the memory and seems to be ok

This is from the screen about the memory.

I am inclined to think it may be the connection on the keyboard because the printer can be plugged into any usb and it has no issues BUT it doesn't matter which port the keyboard is plugged into = it has issues. Does that make any sense

Well, to make sure, you could run the Apple Hardware test (the extended one); here are the instructions:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

If there are no error messages (if there are, please post them), then I'd say it could be the same "quirky" connection problem I had; considering the age of your Mac and assuming it is no longer covered by Applecare, either get used to unplugging/plugging in, or get an estimate to replace the logic board (it won't be cheap).

Edit: you could also try resetting the SMC:

I tried to run the hardware test, but when I put in the disk from the MacBox set for Snow Leopard, it did not come up. Then tried to run it from the original Disk 2 that came with the computer and it clicked for awhile and then spit the disk out????

All of these issues have come since I did the Snow Leopard install from the MacBox set and I am wondering if I did something wrong there.

I also have MacKeeper - wonder if that would point to the problem.

Have Tech Toolbut the license is for my macbook not the imac

Am going to do the reset SMC thing and see if that helps

I also have MacKeeper

From what I learned in other threads here, there appear to be two versions of MacKeeper:

the legitimate version which is pretty much worthless, and

the version which really isn't MacKeeper, but the current Trojan masquerading under several names.

Either way, I would not have it on my Mac; it is superfluous at best.
