Apparently there are at least two types of SDS files.

1. Sample Dump Standard - This is a MIDI protocol for storing an sample that can be loaded into several sample playback hardware devices. Like your old fashioned sampling keyboard or sample module, presumably some softsynths could import these as well.

Basically, sample data stored in a MIDI format. The problem with this format is that samples can take a long time to save or load via MIDI. Back in the day you only used the MIDI Sample Dump standard if you didn't have a SCSI drive attached to your sampler. :-)

2. Simple Data Storage - A compressed format that can hold several different types of data. (pictures, audio etc...)

I'm only familiar with #1. (obviously)

So could an .sds file be loaded and played by logic 9 ? From what I understand in the use of music this format has the midi and sound sample source data all in one . So it does make life easy for one who wants to open a .sds file and alter whats in it without having to load the sample data .

No, because it's not MIDI performance data, it's only a standard MIDI "format" that can hold sample data.

One thing that could be done is load the file in a Logic MIDI track, play it back and load the data into an external sampler. I'm thinking there are other uses as well.

Do you have an example SDS file I can look at, or a link that I can download one and see exactly what it's doing?
