I just bought a used iPhone 4, how do I change the registration on it?

I just bought an iPhone 4 online. It is registered to the person I bought it from (it was their daughters they got her the white one) and now I want to use it and put my phone number on it. I was wondering how you would get around that, and if when I go into set up my phone can I change that? What do I do?

CDMA or GSM version? If GSM, you'll need an activated sim from your provider/carrier. On the phone itself: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. That will retun the phone to a state just like it was when first taken out of the box. You can then plug it into iTunes, name it what you want & sync your content to it. The warranty is tied to the device, not the individual, so you can check remaining warranty here:

The phone should still have warranty remaining, which means you could still purchase AppleCare(if available where you live) to cover the phone for an additional year once the original warranty expires.

Well because the phone used to belong to someone else, is registered as them and they didnt give me any papers or anything, Im wondering if its okay for me to go into the store and and claim it as mine even though it used to belong to someone else. Like its from kijiji and I payed cash, so I dont really have a proof of purchase and their creditcard information pops up when i plug the phone into my mac.
