Why isn't my finger pinch zoom working?

Go into your settings>trackpad and make sure the option is checked.
When I'm on the Internet or in a Word document.
It's not a checkable option. I think it's a given. I've never had trouble with this before.
It should be checkable:
See the "Pinch Open & Close" item. If that's unchecked, that's your problem.
This feature is only useable in apps that support it. I don't know if Word is one of those, but Safari (if that's what you mean by "on the Internet") definitely is. If pinching isn't zooming the page in Safari, you've either got that box unchecked or there's something wrong somewhere (no idea where) in your system.
This is quite puzzling. None of my two-finger actions also has the little blue checkable boxes. There are no boxes, although those same actions are listed.
I've not had problems with this before on Firefox or Word.

Hmm. I just discovered two-fingered rotate doesn't work either. But the two-fingered scroll down still does.
Okay. It seems I'm not alone. This is a problem others have also had when they upgraded to Firefox 4.0. But there are workarounds.
I went and tested this to quite an end. First you should determine if your trackpad is actually working.
My steps were as follows to confirm:
1) Go to System Preferences --> Trackpad --> Scroll and Zoom
2) Confirm that Zoom in or out has a check mark.
3) Test another gesture such as scrolling.
4) Now open a JPG or PNG in Preview. Try the pinch and zoom.
4A) If it works, QUIT the application where it is not working and retry.
4B) If it doesnt work, then restart your machine
5) At RESTART, ZAP your PRAM! Command + Option + P + R
6) Open System Preferences --> Trackpad --> Scroll and Zoom
7) Uncheck your Zoom Preference
8) Click Show All or Close System Preferences so the TrackPad preference gets a fresh write with the setting unchecked
9) Go back to System Preferences --> Trackpad --> Scroll and Zoom
10) Check the Zoom feature
11) Test again.
In MY case I was done at step 4A. I was able to quit safari and mail and upon reopening the application I was back in business.

For anyone still dealing with this issue...
I determined that this was just happening in Safari for me, so I disabled the last extension that I installed, which was fairly recent and since this issue started happening fairly recently, I thought there might be a connection between the two. As soon as I uninstalled that extension (RSS Menu), pinch-to-zoom started working again. I didn't even need to restart the browser. Now that isn't to say there is a problem with the Safari extension, RSS Menu, because I reinstalled it and pinch-to-zoom is still working, so try uninstalling some extensions that you've installed lately. If you haven't installed any lately, try turning them off all together, if they're already turned on.
