Original File number disappeared

(This question is probably due to some wrong action of mine during import)

The original file numbers of my Nikon D80 ("DSC...") are missing in the metadata tab:

- in the subtab "File Info" I get the following identical date information, as in the following example:

'Version Name': 2011-02-17 at 10-51-23 'File Name': 2011-02-17 at 10-51-23.jpeg

- in the respective subtabs "EXIF Info" and "Photo Info":

"Version Name": 2011-02-17 at 10-51-23 "Date": 17/02/11 10:51:23 GMT +01.00

How to repair this, and keep the file number, or to prevent the same thing happening in the future.

Thanks for a solution or any hints.

Set up a file naming preset and use it. See these threads for a good discussion:

Does your answer (and the threads mentioned) apply to new imports in the future only, or also to past imports which naming scheme I want to alter?

As for now, I am still puzzled by the terminology 'Version Name' / 'File Name' used in Metadata's "File Info" drop down menu. Basically my naming preference would be: year, month, day, cameras (actually: Nikon D80, Nikon E5700, Canon Ixus 970 IS), original file number (respectively: DSC, DSCN, IMG).

Does I understand your "set up a file naming preset" advise correctly as in taking the following steps in chronological order: Import Settings > Rename Files > Version Name (and check or uncheck 'Rename Master File'?) > either 'Edit' (dropdown menu) or either one of the other 'Version Name' alternatives?
