Is it possible to edit mp3's in logic without converting first to aiff?

I thought logic could edit mp3's without converting first to aiff. Is this possible?

I have a great audio file of an album that is in mp3 format, downloaded from an artist demo site a couple years ago, by a dj I can't find anywhere on the net. I'm trying to edit out the loud cracks and pops between the songs. If I let logic convert it first to aiff, make the edits, and then convert back to mp3, the quality is terrible from the re-compression.

Any thoughts on other programs that would allow me to edit mp3's natively if Logic won't?

Thanks for your help!!!
