How do I get back to the home page in the iPod app?

Another problem like the other ones. I started to play an audiobook on my iPad.....one I had synced from my iTunes/i/pod. Now I can't get rid of it. I can stop it from playing, but it is taking up half the menu ....has a picture of the book and says "the book (title) is playing." I want to get that off so I can play my music but I can't get out of books and back to the whole ipod menu. I guess my question is how do I get to the iPod app's home page when I am stuck on the books page?

I don't know why this is giving me so much trouble. I check everything and sometimes I find a way to get back to home, but I sure don't see it on this books page of iPod.

If I hit the home button, I leave the iPod app completely. That's not what I need to do. My problem is that when I listen to a book or play a song, I can only stop it temporarily. It gives me directions for pausing, for restarting, for going backward and forward, but it does NOT tell me how to stop the story or song completely. In the menu where all the songs are listed, at the bottom there is a picture of whatever album cover I was playing and the words, "Now Playing." I can get rid of THAT album by playing another album, but then that album cover is there. What I want to do is what we can do on iTunes on our mac,,,,Quit iTunes" Or, in this case, "Quit iPod."

Other people were having trouble because the repeat was turned on. I thought that might be it, so checked that. It was turned on, but when I turned it off the problem was still there. I don't want any album 'now playing' in the menu. If I tap on HOME I leave the app. But, when I come back, the last album is still there and it says, "now playing." I want to shut off.....stop...the last album completely.

This is what I mean: The users guide gives me all these instructions. BUT, it does not give instructions to just STOP. I don't

Pause a song

Tap .

Resume playback

Tap .

Raise or lower the volume

Drag the onscreen volume slider or use the iPad volume buttons.

Restart a song or a chapter in an audiobook or podcast

Tap .

Skip to the next song or chapter in an audiobook or podcast

Tap .

Go to the previous song or chapter in an audiobook or podcast

Tap twice.

Rewind or fast-forward

Touch and hold or —the longer you hold the control, the faster the song rewinds or fast-forwards.

View album art full-size

Tap the album cover when playing a song.

I don't want to pause, resume playback, restart or any of these things. i just want to STOP. How do I do that?

Oops, forgot to say how much I appreciate everyone here. I'm having a terrible time with this iPad....part of it is because the directions in the user manual are like the above: not complete. It tells you all the unusual things, but not the main thing which I'm guessing the author assumes everyone knows. We don't. We don't know how to stop a song or book if there's no place (like on my iPod) that says STOP.

Anyway, you nice people are getting the brunt of what you had nothing to do with....incomplete instructions. And, I have trouble describing exactly what the problem is so you can help. Thanks so much for your great effort in keeping us moving forward. If it hadn't been for this board, I think the iPad would have been thrown in the ocean.

I think therenis no "stop" button. Even in iTunes on a computer it's just the pause button most of the time. The only time I see a stop button in iTunes is when a song is currently playing then Ingo an select another plsylist. That's when the pause btton becomes the square stop button. On the iPad or iPhone its only the pause button. Anyway, pausing it basically stops the song.

What I don't like about no STOP button, is that while the song/audiobook is 'now playing' a picture of the album cover stays in my menu and I can't see what else is in there without scrolling down each time to make a new selection. I would rather that space be devoted to the titles of the selections I have. Maybe I have inadvertently set it so this album shows; I don't think I had this at first.

Yes, there is such an arrow and it does just what you say. I had not seen that before. Now, one more question:

I turn off the audiobook (or rather put it on pause which is all I can do. Then I tap the arrow in iPod and am back to the home screen (thanks for this info!). Now, in the home screen there is still a picture (icon?) of the book that was playing. It's in the lower left hand corner of the library navigation bar. Above that picture it says "now playing." It takes up a lot of the navigation bar so I have to scroll down in order to see what is hidden by it in order to make another selection. Also, when I go back to iPod later, the "now playing" song, book, whatever starts right up. Is there any way to have nothing that is 'now playing'? No picture in the navigation bar hiding my playlists and no selection coming on the instant I return to iPod? I keep thinking I must have a setting that shows the album cover (which I really don't want at all anyway) but I can't find anything that seems to relate to it. In iTunes on my mac, I can set it so there are no album covers at all, but I don't see that on the iPad.

Thanks so much....just finding the arrow is fabulous!

AFAIK there is no way to not have anything in the bottom left corner of that navigation screen. You could try removing the album art from iTunes on your computer but you will still get that generic "note" picture with the name of the song underneath it. The only thing that may be helpful is to use your iPad in portrait mode so you can see as much of tnat list as possible at all times.

As long as you tap the pause button at the top of the iPod screen, the song should not begin playing again on it's own when you go back to the iPod App.

BTW ... I was saying the sme thing to you as Roosevelt was saying - but I was relating it to songs. AFAIK - It doesn't matter what you are playing in the iPod app - songs, audiobooks, podcasts. Tap on the screen - the album art, the book, the podcast - whatever - and that arrow pops up to take you back to the home screen.

Unfortunately, I think that is the design of the iPod app - to mimic the behavior of the iPod device. Usually with a computer program there is a way to fully quit the program and on startup it starts from scratch. The iPod app design seems to assume you always want to quickly return to the last thing you where doing with the device. Even if you kill the iPod app, it will try to pick up with the last thing it was doing when you restart it. Even though the iPad hardware is more capable, the underlying architecture is very limited. The iPad is not going to be able to run to far ahead of the iPhone and iPod devices. I think to some extent, the Apple apps serve as basic and/or demo apps. Once you get use to them, it may be worth looking at other 3rd party apps that provide similar functionality.

I've learned to block out the Now Playing section of the iTunes/iPod interface because I can never get the correct covers to appear. Hopefully Apple will improve the iPad version of the iPod app's design over time. Right now it is pretty clunky and wasteful.

Thanks for participating on the boards.

I realized after I wrote that it may not have come off the way I intended.

I want for Janice to just take a deep breath and relax. I think she will be just fine and unfortunately she seems to be letting the device sort of get to her. Your answers were more detailed than mine so they were more helpful to her.

Keep up the good work. That's the idea behind all of this support stuff! :)
