How do I get back to the home page in the iPod app?

If I hit the home button, I leave the iPod app completely. That's not what I need to do. My problem is that when I listen to a book or play a song, I can only stop it temporarily. It gives me directions for pausing, for restarting, for going backward and forward, but it does NOT tell me how to stop the story or song completely. In the menu where all the songs are listed, at the bottom there is a picture of whatever album cover I was playing and the words, "Now Playing." I can get rid of THAT album by playing another album, but then that album cover is there. What I want to do is what we can do on iTunes on our mac,,,,Quit iTunes" Or, in this case, "Quit iPod."

Other people were having trouble because the repeat was turned on. I thought that might be it, so checked that. It was turned on, but when I turned it off the problem was still there. I don't want any album 'now playing' in the menu. If I tap on HOME I leave the app. But, when I come back, the last album is still there and it says, "now playing." I want to shut off.....stop...the last album completely.

This is what I mean: The users guide gives me all these instructions. BUT, it does not give instructions to just STOP. I don't

I don't want to pause, resume playback, restart or any of these things. i just want to STOP. How do I do that?

Oops, forgot to say how much I appreciate everyone here. I'm having a terrible time with this iPad....part of it is because the directions in the user manual are like the above: not complete. It tells you all the unusual things, but not the main thing which I'm guessing the author assumes everyone knows. We don't. We don't know how to stop a song or book if there's no place (like on my iPod) that says STOP.

Anyway, you nice people are getting the brunt of what you had nothing to do with....incomplete instructions. And, I have trouble describing exactly what the problem is so you can help. Thanks so much for your great effort in keeping us moving forward. If it hadn't been for this board, I think the iPad would have been thrown in the ocean.

What I don't like about no STOP button, is that while the song/audiobook is 'now playing' a picture of the album cover stays in my menu and I can't see what else is in there without scrolling down each time to make a new selection. I would rather that space be devoted to the titles of the selections I have. Maybe I have inadvertently set it so this album shows; I don't think I had this at first.

Yes, there is such an arrow and it does just what you say. I had not seen that before. Now, one more question:

I turn off the audiobook (or rather put it on pause which is all I can do. Then I tap the arrow in iPod and am back to the home screen (thanks for this info!). Now, in the home screen there is still a picture (icon?) of the book that was playing. It's in the lower left hand corner of the library navigation bar. Above that picture it says "now playing." It takes up a lot of the navigation bar so I have to scroll down in order to see what is hidden by it in order to make another selection. Also, when I go back to iPod later, the "now playing" song, book, whatever starts right up. Is there any way to have nothing that is 'now playing'? No picture in the navigation bar hiding my playlists and no selection coming on the instant I return to iPod? I keep thinking I must have a setting that shows the album cover (which I really don't want at all anyway) but I can't find anything that seems to relate to it. In iTunes on my mac, I can set it so there are no album covers at all, but I don't see that on the iPad.
