Hi,

Only MobileMe and @mac.com forms of Apple IDs are Valid AIM names for iChat. (If you have one of these the MORE section below)

If your ID is based on an email from anyone other than Apple, such as an ISP issued one, Hotmail.com or Yahoo.com for instance, will not be a valid Screen Name with the AIM service.

You can Register for free names with AIM or @mac.com

IF you use the @mac.com one you cnnot use an Email that is already used with an existing Apple ID. You have to list an Alternative Email for contact purposes.

With the AIM one you list an Email only to help with password recovery.

You also get the option to actually use your existing email.

MORE

Apple let you create password longer than 16 characters for both @Mac.com names and MobileMe accounts

Unfortunately the AIM servers can only manage to handle passwords up to 16 characters.

Use your MobileMe account page to change the password or use iForgot to change an @mac.com one.

@mac.com names registered this way are not email accounts. (It is possible that people who had @mac.com names before the MobileME service started have linked them to their Mobileme account and they still work - these people will have two Valid AIM Names - one ending @mac.com and one ending @me.com)

Hi,

Not too long ago the @mac.com registration was not an Apple ID (it was an option though)

This meant you could link any other email to an iChat Name

Even more recently the AIM Registration process has seemingly linked it to an AIM email address (Where as that was an option before)

It should allow you to link one email with an AIM name though.

Hi,

Yes, if the NTLworld Email is already an Apple ID then that eamail cannot be used to create a Another Apple ID (As @Mac.com names are)
