i pressed the sleep/ wake button on my ipod nano 6g to turn sleep it
the button is now stuck in
is this a common fault and what shall i do?

i just had the same problem with my ipod today. I read this is a common problem. sry but i havent found a solution to the problem.
the only thing that you can do for this ipod now is to send the ipod nano in for servicing
if you are still covered under the one year warranty it would be free
this is very common, do not send it in or buy another one because you will face the exact same problem soon. the refurbished ipods you get back from repair will last 6 months if you are lucky. I have had this ipod replaced 3 times (4 broken ipods), all of them had stuck buttons. You can find a youtube video on how to fix it yourself but it will void the warrently once you open the device and you run the risk of breaking it completely (like i did). I will never buy another 6th gen ipod again.
