My MacBook Pro keeps crashing

I am having a similar problem and it seems to be related to using a second monitor. Other discussion threads within this site have linked it to a video card switching issues. Like you, it started with PowerPoint (Office 2011) on my MacBook Pro, but now seems to happen randomly, several times a day. I also have to power off my computer by holding the power button and then restart my computer (it is almost as if the computer is still awake, but the screen is no long working).

I have since unplugged my second monitor and have not had any crashes (going on 6 hours, but really, that is a current record!) and am able to use PowerPoint in SlideShow mode (which is where I first developed the mysterious black screen issue).

My question to you...do you have a second monitor attached to your computer? I am hoping that this is the common problem.

I did not try it with a second monitor. I went to the apple store and they ran extended diagnostics on it for a day, determined it was a SW problem. THe did a clean install and the problem was still there. Sent it off for hardware repair. When I got it back I could not logoff of my account or restore from Time Machine. Took it back and they replaced the system. All is well now.

Cleaning up my discussions. Apple ended up replacing the logic board, and I still had problems. They replaced the entire system and all has been working fine.

This is the same problem for me and I took it to the mac store in Westfiields straford, London and they can't help me. It's really fustrating.

They said I should do a complete restart of the system but then I would need to reinstall all my software, which would take me about a day.

I have studio sessions and don't have time.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Having same issue mac store did sw reinstall and problem stil exsists😠 I think it has to do with the graphics card but nothing shows up on the diagnostics they do. This is silly. Im starting to loose faith in mac

Yep it is stressful. In the end I took it to the mac store and they installed a new motherboard. Not only am I too losing faith in my mac as it gets slower and slower so to is my iPhone. But they all have intel inside so they all have a shelf live.
