What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

FYI, Apple is deleting some topics pertaining to people voicing their opinions on iWeb and iDisk. Just be careful.

To Apple: Stop deleting topics of peoples concerns about iWeb and iDisk. It would be better if you would announce or release a statement on your intentions about iWeb and iDisk.

Of course iWeb will still work. It is an application just as Pages is and will still work if you use it.

All you need to do to upload to another host is publish to your desktop and then use another ftp program to upload - Cyberduck is good for this purpose and it's free.

Of course there are 3rd party alternatives and perhaps better ones but for Apple to simply drop key services such as iDisk and Mobile Me support for iWeb is a slap in the face to it's loyal customers and makes this new "iCloud" service an insulting joke. BTW, what is Apple's migration path for it's iDisk and iWeb hosting customers? It better not be just manually move your files over to some other service.

It is not a reasonable solution to just move files to a third party host since one of the biggest advantages of an iWeb site was the one step adding of blog post updates. I have a business web site that works very nicely with iWeb and it is important to my income that it stay operating in the way it did before.

I was burned by Apple dumping iCards. There has never been any alternative even half way as good to replace it and if iWeb one step publishing is eliminated that is a second and even more serious burning. You do not forget or forgive things like that. I will never ever use another Apple service again if I have to move my website. If they cannot be trusted to continue services then I cannot build my life around them.

As it is I will be like a lot of people who will refuse to put my contacts and email online online just for security reasons and bandwidth reasons mean I will never use online services for photos and music.

Let us hope that using iCloud is optional because from what I am seeing I will have to abandon iOS and if necessary Macintosh entirely if iCloud is forced upon us. I have had Macs since the old century and it upsets me a great deal to be filled with fear like I am by the changes that are proposed.

I put up with not having Flash on my iPhone and on my iPad. I use iWeb to publish my websites. I will not abide Apple's decision to no longer support iWeb and my websites. This would be my reason to leave a long and happy association with Apple Computers and look for a company who supports its clients.

iWeb is an app that can still be used whatever happens. If you have it, it will still work and you can easily publish your site to another server if and when MMe ceases to exist.

it is not true that publishing via FTP is the same as publishing via Mobile Me. Several iWeb features do not work when published to another server. The hit counter does not work, password protection does not work, blog search does not work, and most importantly commenting does not work. The whole point of a blog and photo albums is to get customer feedback and interaction via comments on blog posts and photos. This problem cannot be overcome as it is a characteristic of the way iWeb works at the present time. Apple might surprise us and rewrite the code to support interactive features, passwords etc on third party servers but they appear to have stopped developing the app in recent years.

I am seeing so many people trying to seed the discussions (about how upset people are over the unknown fate of iWeb) with suggestions such as; Try this or that web site building alternative, or Apple isn't obligated to you, or "you can easily publish your site to another server" blah, blah, blah. The fact is, thousands of people have learned to count on iWeb and Apple's one click publishing AND hosting to make their web sites. They have learned to make great looking web sites quickly with iWeb. They like iWeb. Some of us have used it for years. Apple is likely pulling the rug out from under ALL of these people. Many Sites, Blogs, Podcasts, Business Sites etc. will now simply cease to be if Apple stops supporting iWeb during the transition to "iCloud". The most frustrating thing of all is that Apple has not (as of yet) even said one thing about what will happen to all of the web sites already created with iWeb. They are just ignoring it so far. They have only given press releases about MobileMe going away. It is rude in my opinion. Trying to "spin" the dialog is not what is needed now. Apple needs to answer the many legitimate concerns all the iWeb users here are raising.

This has nothing to do with iWeb - iWeb is an app that you will still be able to use to build websites. Even if discontinued it will still work and is totally separate from MobileMe whatever happens.

I like iWeb and have been using it for quite a while now and actually, once I learned how to use it, it sparked my interest html and css and javascript and as I have learned more, all my sites have become that much more complex, now with integrated drop down menus and lots of html code and scrolling text boxes etc.

I still intend to use iWeb to help me design and build websites whatever happens, the difference is that I don't use MobileMe to host them, having always preferred the ease and cheapness of other hosts like GoDaddy, where you can purchase a domain name and where you get more for your bucks, withe database integration, WordPress and Form Mail etc.

Again, pointed out by other people, certain functions that iWeb has will not work on any other web hosting without doing some modifications to the host server, even then, sometime it wont work period. Some of us don't have the experience or the time to do complex HTML coding or of the like. iWeb and iDisk (as a host) works seamlessly.

Its up to all of us who use iWeb and iDisk (as a hosting service or other) to let Apple know we are not only concerned, but also upset with the lack of details about retaining to some features that are used on MobileMe such as Back to My Mac and iPhoto Gallery.

I know that building a web site isn't the most fun thing in the world to do and learn about if you deem yourself "not tech savvy" but use this as an opportunity to learn what's out there! It's like relying on that employee who knows how to do that certain job no one else knows how to do.. and suddently up and leaves your company... always good to have a back up and keep learning... especially when it comes to technology... I'm still a fan of Apple keeping up with it's competitors... and look forward to shopping at the Retail Stores without one less thing that their employess have to get me hooked on.. 🙂
