Aperture and iCloud - what happens to MobileMe galleries?

I have the same concern, i use MobileMe Gallery for both iPhone and Aperture photos. I will be extremely disappointed with Apple if this service is lost. I am also hoping that iDisk is not lost either as i use this for storing and sharing a variety of file types, not just Numbers, Pages and Keynote.

I'm hoping this is one of things where "We have 250 things to tell you but we only have time to tell you 10" and am hoping they've got that figured out.

I'd wouldn't be very happy if they just deleted it and didn't have any equivalent offering available. I like the presentation and control of my images that I have with MobileMe galleries and I'm not very fond of Flickr (Flickr is nice as a "social" website for photographers but I don't think it's a very good way to present a presentation.)

I know there are other hosting options which make Aperture plug-ins available (I haven't tried any.)

My website is built in iWeb, uploaded and hosted on my iDisc and is underpinned by my MobileMe Galleries.

Apple are going to pull the plug on my website...I'm VERY ANNOYED about this stunt.

Ditto. I use about 10GB of storage for my movies and fotos. It would be a shame to lose this capability.

There are currently a number of threads going on this subject, some of them fairly extensive. Many people are understandably upset by Apple's cold-hearted dismissal of the MobileMe service and especially MobileMe photo galleries. For photographers who value an aesthetically pleasing presentation, there is no good substitute for MobileMe galleries that I know of. If anyone has a suggestion, please share it with us.

It is absolutely, inequitably wrong for Apple to to abandon all the MobileMe users with its faltered plan to discontinue the service. Synching aside, it was and is the best and most economical way to share files and data for small companies like mine. I was screwed when Apple discontinued dotMac after having spent days and weeks developing a web site utilizing the now defunct service. I purchase the 60GB plan at roughly $200.00 per year and It's like DejaVu all over again. Shame on you Apple if you stop supporting this wonderful product.

Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

When iCloud becomes available this fall, more details and instructions will be provided on how to make the move.

Can I create a new MobileMe account?

You can no longer create a new 60-day trial account or start a new subscription using a code contained in a MobileMe box. However, if you have a Family Pack subscription, you can still create new family member accounts

I'm really afraid that your iDisk fears may come true. From what Steve Jobs said during the keynote: that "Documents in the Cloud could be a solution to all their document storage", I assume from this statement that iDisk is dead and they are fully pushing for iWork suite or 3rd party app integration as opposed to using Finder and iDisk.

He kept repeating that they are trying to get rid of file system, so I see no reason for them to keep iDisk, which relies on file system. I do envision, though, a 3rd party software which would allow you to upload to iCloud Documents library whatever you want. They've made an API for that, so by the time fall comes, you may as well have "an app for that"!

FIrst when iPhoto was release and I couldn't navigate through it's illogical library in the FInder, I was mad, but once they spruced up the navigation in the app itself, I no longer need to go int eh Finder. IN app navigation and search is so much faster and intuitive that I no longer use Finder.

I wish every app started utilizing this new API and Finder could once and for all RIP

The beauty of iDisk is that you can upload anything, and share it with anyone, with the greatest of ease. I haven't heard anyone claim that iCloud will have anything like this functionality. Services like iCloud that automatically sync certain types of data are fine, but are of limited use when you look at the bigger picture.

Before iCloud, Mac users could have photo galleries, file sharing and screen sharing if they paid for MobileMe. Now no Mac users will have these things. This is progress???

I share this concern and the others raised in this discussion.

I'm hoping that Apple will shortly issue a clear statement of what the iCloud announcement means in detail.

I wouldn't believe that they'd kill all the good things in MobileMe, including Galleries. 1click Gallery sharing is built into the iLife apps and hopefully will stay that way. You guys think that Apple would kill the 1-click share feature? I doubt it. That's what makes MobileMe so great! The only thing keeping it from taking the market was its price.

Photostream isn't bad, but albums are albums! The won't kill'em.

What I'm worried about is sync of my keychains, dock, widgets, and other stuff from MobileMe sync! I hope that stays. They will backup all iOS5 devices, but what about Lion?

You may doubt it, but Apple hasn't said one word about replacing MobileMe galleries, iDisk file storage/sharing or Back to My Mac screen sharing—which, for my money, were MobileMe's three killer capabilities. They haven't said a word about anything but syncing contacts, calendars and whatnot, plus Photostream, which has no photo gallery capabilities whatsoever. Read it and weep.

I've read it all. True they haven't said anything. That's what's weird.

I have a suspicion that they haven't (as usual) told us everything. Since we have until fall, lots can change until then. Demand will dictate what they'll have to offer. We all have one more year of enjoying our galleries and if the demand isn't strong enough, they won't ever add galleries, if people complain and create demand, things will be added. This wouldn't be the first time Apple released a product, waited for months before selling it, collected feedback and had remedies for it by the time it was on the shelves. Look at Apple TV. They've added Netflix after complaints.

I have no doubt in my mind, that by the time MobileMe kicks the bucket for good there will be galleries in iCloud. Facebook has them, Flick has them, so will Apple.

I wished so much that Apple would incorporate PING into the iCloud!

Having a MEDIAFACEBOOK would be cool - share a non stop stream of videos, music and pictures with friends! Better than dumb teenager "why I hate going to work today" posts on FB
