Sudden repetitive Kernel Panic | Mac Pro

Question

Hi thereToday my Mac Pro has crashed repetitively while booting (during the grey and the blue screen) and after booting out of elementary finder actions (opening windows, moving windows). The crashs occur at the latest 10 minutes after a succesful boot!What I&#x27;ve done so far (without success):- Reset PRAM- Reset SCM- Booting from the MAC Pro Install CD (crashes also after some Both of those panic reports list the cause as Machine check -- uncorrected error. That&#x27;s a RAM memory problem.Your Mac Pro (tower) has Error Correcting Code ECC memory. Hardware generates redundancy bits and checks them on every read from memory. Single-bit errors are detected and corrected on the fly. Double-bit errors are intended to cause a kernel panic and stop the machine before the error can corrupt anything more. That is what is happening to your Mac. If it will not run for very long, take the side door off while it is running (it is not interlocked) and look for red error lights next to the memory modules. There are no hazardous Voltages that can be accessed with your fingers without tools, but components may be HOT.If it will run for a while, use Apple System Profiler &gt; Memory to look for modules at half their known size (these have failed) or whose status is other than "OK" (those are showing Single-Bit errors, and may soon experience a double-bit error.

If you get the same panic in safe mode, then you have a hardware fault. Probably it&#x27;s a bad memory chip, but it could be other things as well. Rather than attempting a more specific diagnosis yourself, I suggest you take the unit to an Apple Store or other authorized service outlet for testing.

thanks a lot; it was indeed a bad memory module. I tried the hardware test but the test wouldn&#x27;t even run until I removed the faulty 2GB module. Now the mac is up an running! What a relief, that&#x27;s the first hardware issue in a mac since starting in 1984!

I started having the same type of kernel panics.  The computer would run for a while then panic.  Removed the hard drive and tested in a different computer.  No Panics.  Mac Pro core 8 dou.  Panic &#x3D; IA32_MC3_STATUS(0x40d)Okay, I used common sence and opened the door of the computer and placed an external fan pointing only at the hard drive logic board, vertical board in the computer.  The fan was not able to cool any other part of the computer.  The computer does not panic anymore.  Used a thermal temperature (radio shack) point and click and found the Intel chip which controls the logic board to be operating over it normal temperature range.  Conclusion.  The vertical I/O board requires replacement.  Local apple store does not understand that a computer must be burned in for testing thermal problems.  Standard flow chart testing on the stores part.  Will now have to bring the computer back to the store and demand a replacement board.  I am a hardware engineer and been designing logic boards for over 20 years.  Apple care tech most likely have never seen a computer chip, let alone component level trouble shoot. You may want to try the same test,   Purchase a box fan from radio shack. aim the fan at the vertical logic board and let the fan run for 5 minutes then power up the computer and see if this fixes the problem, then have the board replaced.
