HP LaserJet 4MP jobs stopped message

I realize that many people have had this issue, but I haven't seen my specific situation in the discussions archives, so here goes:

My old LW 4/600 died recently. It was connected to my G4 "Pixar" iMac, OS X 10.4.11, via an AsanteTalk bridge Ethernet adapter. Worked great for years.

I just bought a used HP LaserJet 4M Plus on eBay to replace it. I have connected everything just as it was with the LW 4/600, and...viola', I am getting the "jobs stopped" message. When I use the Printer Setup Utility, the HP is listed and even checked as the default printer, but it is grayed out, and I cannot get to it. I have deleted all the printers via the reset command, and reinstalled them. No matter what I have done, I remain stuck.

So, what can be done?
