Your terminology is what's confusing things. Strictly speaking, a .IMG file is *not* a video file, but rather a *disc image*, as Dave pointed out above. Having said that, though, a common use of .img files is to burn images of DVDs. Did this file originated as a DVD?
Here's something worth trying, since it's worked for me in the past. Just *rename* the file extension from .IMG to .ISO, and see if Disk Utility can mount it. You should then be able to extract the contents and convert them to whatever format you prefer. Do note, however, that if this disc began life as a DVD, you'll need a program that can handle the requisite encryption, and you should be certain that converting the file to another format is legal.
Good luck!

Unless you're referring to a format I'm not familiar with, a .img file is a disk image file and cannot be directly converted to another format, it being just a container, not data as such. You have to mount the disk image and extract its contents, and then convert if the contents are a video file.
Have you tried just double-clicking the .img file and seeing if it mounts on your system?
Regards.
I was sent a video and it is in .IMG format...I am trying to download it to a website but the website does not take videos in .IMG format only in .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, or .MPG format...so i am trying to see if there is a way to convert my .IMG video into one of those formats. I do not have a problem downloading it to my computer I just cant download it to the website.
Thanks
As stated, a .IMG file is more typically a disk image, not a video file. There are cases, though - there's a finite number of filename extensions and it's possible that this is an uncommon image format, although I'd still expect it to be a static image and not a movie.
So the question is whether you're sure this is a video, or whether it's a static image, or whether it's a disk image that contains your video. That hasn't yet been established. If the file is public you could post a link so others can examine it if you're unsure.
If it is a static image file then Graphic Converter should be able to open it and save it into a more common format. Also, if you can get it into iMovie you can create a video file of the image although that seems like an odd choice.
Ok sorry about the confusion this is not a video like the kind you would find on a DVD my friend just used her iPhone to record her daughter doing a dance and when she text it to me it was in .IMG format.
Eric the file does not end in .IMG the file name is IMG_2596.3GP, sorry I probably should have said that in the beginning.
Sorry about the confusion but I am not computer savvy at all, I am just trying to convert this file lol.
Thank you everyone for your responses I finally got it to an .AVI file and uploaded to the website!!!...Eric I did exactly what you said which was change the end of the file from.3GP to .AVI...simple enough rite...Thank you so much I was trying to do this all day.
Yes, that information would have made a lot of difference in how we responded. Someone else here may have alternative, better suggestions, but here's one app that says it can convert 3GP files:

I know nothing about it other than what the developer says about it.
Regards.
Glad to hear it! Sometimes certain formats are in fact 1:1 compatible, and all you need to do is change the extension.
If you have a moment, don't forget to mark this question "answered" so others don't respond.
Cheers,
Eric.
