You have to install iOS 5 with iTunes 10.3!!!

Afte rinstallaing iOS 5, install iTunes 10.5 on you PC. Then everything must be okay.

Hey, I figured it out. Have the iTunes 10.3.1 and PRESS SHIFT+ RESTORE, NOT UPRGRADE. That gave me the area, also go to Local Disk-WINDOWS- System 32- Drivers- Etc. and go open the hosts file with notepad. Make sure you don't have the 74.... gs.apple.com line and the end of the text. If you have tinyumbrella or something that saves SHSH Blobs it make put it back again. So, exit and save, and make sure that text is there.
Hopefully it works
Good Luck

Hi

I was faced same problem. Download restore file manullly and tried to install via Update+Shift key. Unsuccesfully.

I just place downloaded restore file to original iPhone software download location and push button Update. It works.

It seeems that there's a need to strictly follow the routine fo backaup--> update in the proper way

The location of software updat efolder is ( for vista and Win7):

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

Just wanted to confirm that your suggested method works perfectly. I was getting error 3002, rebooted, but it didn't help. I'm using Windows XP. By the way, since I'm outside the US with poor Intenet, I had to download iOS 5 outside of Apple because it took many, many hours (over 10). I saved it in My Documents, put it in the iPod Software Updates folder (that I had to create), but Restore didn't look for it there. Instead, it asked me where the .ipsw file (iOS 5) was and I simply pointed it to My Documents. Everyone should be aware that they must Restore from the same computer they use to synch their iPod because Restore deletes everything and then reinstalls all your apps.
