I too am experiencing this issue and have had no luck. I've cycled off both PC (windows7) and iPhone, disabling firewalls, and rebooting with device connected. I get a glimmer of hope with rebooting PC with iPhone connected because iPhone starts drawing power upon startup but iPhone still doesn't appear in device manager. If at that point iPhone is disconnected and reconnected it will not even draw power.
PLEASE HELP!!! Dying to upgrade from iOS 4.3.2 to 5!

I resolved my issue after discovering an issue with the usb drivers through Device Manager. A windows update resolved the issue and, after a restart, iTunes was able to discover my iPhone.

Hello, just a quick update : in the end i just returned it to the shop.
And after one week ... i got a new one.
So for me the problem was solved.
I guess it was something that didn't connect well with the charger.
