Hi, I have the same prob and there are also a few hits recently on this forum. I have an IBM A50P with XP home SP2, tried everything and eventually gave up and went back to the apple shop. They informed me that its probably a fried disk and suggested I request a replacement... waiting for my empty ship box now.
What they did say is that it could have been caused by a corrupt file from 'other' music download sites! Not in my case though as I've only imported my own CD's and a couple of albums from the itunes site.
Has your PC ever crashed during an upload? Mine did and on auto reboot it did a chkdsk of drive H (the ipod) and found 4 corruptions which it fenced. Trouble is, according to the guru at the shop, is when you then do a restore of the ipod it does a complete wipe of the ipod disk and therefore unfences the damaged bits of the disk! helpful? NOT

I have the same problem. I've sent my ipod and I got it back again, because there was damage on my ipod caused by third party. I've got my ipod for 3 months now and I haven't had chance to play a single song on it. So I phoned the helpdesk and they said it probably would be a software problem, but he couldn't help me because I passed the 90 days. So he only would help me if I would buy the extra Support Coverage for another 50 euro's. I've paid so much money and I got nothing right now. I'm pretty sure I won't buy something of apple again... Unless they come up with something soon.

I'm having the same problem and I'm on iPod number 3 at the moment... Has anyone who's had this problem ever had a resolution to it? The second iPod seems to be a bit more resiliant to the problem. I've tried updating the USB drivers on my laptop (which is completely up to date) but that didn't seem to fix the problem. It's a bit hard to believe the the new iPods could be so flakey when running on windows. I'm starting to get really p *ed of with Apple with the lack of help to try and find a solution to this problem...

Count me in on this problem!
This is my first Apple product and I was so excited to go out and get it and now it has just been a time consuming headache. I have tried the five suggestions Apple placed in the support page, I have the tried it with the newest iTunes and the updated iPod software and I have tried it with the software included on the cd-rom, yet I cannot stop the iPod from resetting itself and wiping everything clean.
Frustration does not even begin to describe how I'm feeling.
Does anyone know if Target will accept returns/exchanges on this or do I have to deal with Apple directly? I bought it 3 days ago.

Thanks for any help!!!

Hi all, received my replacement ipod from apple yesterday and was feeling very wary of even attempting to use it. Got home last night and followed their instructions to the letter. Guess what.. this ipod is doing exactly the same thing, constantly disconnecting when uploading songs from itunes to the ipod. I eventually got the exclamation mark of death and tried to restore th eipod but got the firmware failure message so went back through the deinstall of itunes / quicktime / updater and installed the back level versions from my CD... exactly the same problem, firmware failure. I have an old thinkpad running win 2000 with USB 1 and was able to use this to restore the ipod (albeit slowly) but it would only allow me to restore to the latest updater. I loaded about a gig of songs onto the laptop and these downloaded to the ipod ok, albeit VERY slowly.

I think I have come to the end of the road now and will this weekend take the covers of my PC and see who makes my USB 2 ports (but I'm sure thy are all onboard to the motherboard). If thats the case then I'm off to PC world to purchase the belkin USB 2 PCI card to see if that works.... let you all know.

Well I bit the bullit and went and bought the USB PCI card Apple 'recommends' Belkin F5U219 and installed it in my last available PCI slot. I have managed to upload about 15GB of music and pictures without any problem. As a final test I tried to restore the ipod using the PC and its worked. This is a first on the PC (had to use my laptop for restores up until now) as I always got 'Firmware Update Failure'.
Last test was to resync again and that has worked as well.

So all is well and good now, fingers crossed, but it begs the question, 'why wouldn't it work with onboard USB ports? Appled Ipod / IBM PC!'

So now I have a working IPOD and a PC with no spare PCI slots and of course £40 quid down due to the PCI card!

Do you recon Apple will reimburse me for the card ? Ok doubt it, maybe I'll try to get Applecare for free!!!
