iTunes 10.3.1 … new update

I am also having problems with this update. I bought the music "Animal Rights" on a seperate computer. On my MacBook in my "Ping" it shows that I have purchased this song, but then against the song it has a "buy for 99p" button. If I click on this link, I get a reminder asking if I am sure that I want to purchase this.

What am I doing wrong? How can I download it onto my Macbbok?

I would not worry about this.

In terms of your concern of iCloud, there is nothing in this update which would be a security threat. The only thing the iTunes cloud does for you, is to put it simply: let you re-download songs you've purchased already at no extra charge. You can even use this to download to other devices (up to 10 I think).

So remember the big concern everyone constantly has of "oh I lost my music, how do I redownload it?" well, that's going to be for the most part a non issue now.

I'd download 10.3.1 because the ability to re-download your music at no extra charge is a huge plus.

You also have the option to have your Mac automatically download any music, apps, or books purchased by any other device under your Apple ID, but by default this is turned OFF, and you can just manually download content you already bought at your leisure.

Thank You iTunes for allowing me to download songs that I have Purchased from a couple years ago and now I have them back because of you.

you certainly have every right to be cautious. However, if you are referring to Sony's incident as in the Playstation network hacking, that was regarding Sony's database service, not a software update (as far as I know.)

Now, I am not saying Apple's billing database is un-hackable (although, I'd like to speculate Apple has a bit more resources and money to make something more protected than Sony, given how Apple has more paying customers to protect), but regardless of if that does or doesn't happen, the software update to 10.3 would not be the cause of it.

You mention "the security element", if you use the iTunes Store now to purchase content, then there is no difference if you download 10.3.1 and continue to use the service.

Again, if you don't want to upgrade that is totally up to you, it is just my advisement that you can be able to take advantage of 10.3's new feature at no additional security risk if you already have your billing information entrusted to Apple.

I just had the opposite happen.

First of all there were two updates yesterday and then today.

I have about 206 purchased songs, there are all in my library but only 25 are showing in the home purchased file.

In iTunes under purchase with (new) next to it in orange, under songs it lists all 206 songs as downloaded.

Under recent purchase it shows 50 songs.

I did not buy 50 songs at one time, I would say that it was over at least a two year period.

And yet in the home purchased file it lists 25, which are the last 25 I purchased.

I am 68 and have 1000's of records and CD's and rerecorded them and downloaded very few (206) over the years.

Since they are in my home library should I be concerned ?

Any reason why the store shows 50 and my home purchase shows 25 ?

Frankly I do not remember the last time I looked at my purchased file, so I cannot say when this happened.

The "Recent Items" in Purchased History is simply your last 50 purchases, and does not list recent items in regards to items purchased in a certain recent timeframe.

I am confused as to what you mean by the "home purchased file", do you mean home sharing?

All the 206 songs are in my master library, where I can send them to other created albums or my iPhone and iPod.

I hope I made myself clear.

Ok, so all of your purchased songs (206) are in your iTunes Library, and you said all of your purchased songs (206) are visible to re-download using the Purchased List in the iTunes store...correct?

I just am trying to understand how my home file shows a different number of songs compared to what is in my iTunes store purchase file and in the iTunes store file on my computer.

In other words,

(A) I have 206 songs in my full music library BUT the purchased file under store only shows 25.

(B) If I go into the iTunes store and hit the purchased button in shows the 206 as total downloaded and 50 under recent.

Does the iTunes purchase file under "STORE" only show the last 25 purchases ?
If so, I am ok, I just am wondering what the reason is.

Unfortunately i never checked or noticed this before so I am somewhat not giving a clear question I guess.

The end result is that I still have all my 206 songs in my music file and I can copy or transfer them and all is good.

AHX is exactly correct. This update has zero bearing with respect to security. It simply provides more functionality without any impact on security.What I REALLY like most about newest update is that it finally supports complete syncronicity between devices with iBooks. I can now pick up exactly where I left off reading on either iPad or iPhone. The "cloud" knows where I've last finished reading on the most recently used device.

Unfortunately it is still a bit confusing, but I think everything is working the way it is meant too. It sounds like nothing is wrong, that just may be how iTunes does things and shows the last 25 in one place, and last 50 in another.

By saying "99p" I am guessing that you are not in the United States. As of now, the only country that can re-download music with iTunes in the Cloud is the US. Other countries should get this functionality later. For example, I read an article on MacRumors that stated the UK for example will not get this until 2012 sometime. No dates have been announced yet.

Unfortunately I don't think it's Apples fault entirely. Sure, they probably prioritized the US, but they need to make the record companies happy in every single country. It's just the (unfortunately) annoying side of business.

It isn't really about valuing customers. It is all about licensing in different countries. Although the record companies are multi-national, many of the organisations which look after us performers' rights are not. There is a whole chain of people involved it changing the way artists' work gets distributed and how they are recompensed for it. It seems like a very long time ago now, but the discussion amongst the music community about whether or not the iTunes store was going to be a good or bad thing was quite heated. (Still is in some quarters...)

Anyway, my point is, just as when the iTMS was first 'released', and just as when they started adding movies; we will just have to wait until the legal wranglings are sorted out. There might be some element of waiting to see how sales are affected in the US first!
