Q: Printing to a LaserWriter 12/640

Until yesterday, I have been printing from Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.x for over a year to my 14 year-old (and wonderful) Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS.  Suddenly today I get this message:

Network host '192.168.0.123' is busy; will retry in 10 seconds...

And it never prints…

I never had that problem or any problem since configuring that IP address via OS9 on my G4733 running OS 9.2.2 a year or so ago--

But now I have that problem - tried restarting, re-installing the printer-- booting to another copy of SL on my BackUp drive; using the shared eMac running 10.5.11-- everything except going back to OS 9.2.2 (which I don't think I need to do as the first sheet prints-out on startup and shows 192.168.0.123 as the IP address.

HELP!  I use this printer regularly- excellent - but now this…

Best regards,

Steve Schulte

    Hi Steve,

My eMac is running nicely with 9.2.2. Sure has been a wonderful reminder of when things were much easier.

    Okay, so in reponse to the questions;

    1. I would expect that with the OS 9 Mac connecting directly to the Ethernet adaptor of the LW that the printer should have appeared in the Apple Printer Utility. Page 251 shows an image of the utility and the printers it finds on the network. Without an AppleTalk device I cannot confirm this so my APU just shows a blank entry, same as yours. But as I said I would expect yours utility to show the LW. And since it is not then it may have a problem with the Ethernet adaptor?

    2. Great. As does appear to be reasonably easy to change the IP settings, once the printer is found.

    3. Well, this is not in response to point 3 but the next paragraph regarding another connection method. Page 19 shows the connection between the Mac and LW using LocalTalk connectors. If you still have this cable somewhere maybe you can connect the printer to the Mac this way and use the printer utility with this type of connection.

If this still doesn't work then another suggestion would be to reset the LW to factory defaults. This is shown on page 240, last bulleted note, but I have copied it below also.

Reset the communications settings to their factory default values by settingthe communication switch to the Reset (out) position. Turn the printer offand back on again. Set the communication switch to the Normal (in) position.

This is the switch at the back as shown on page 27. And I also suggest you look at page 321 regarding this switch and what protocols are used when the switch is set in either position. Given that it is printing a setup page when powering on then it would indicate that the switch is in reset position. Maybe setting it to normal position would be better?

Okay, let's see how that goes...

    Pahu,

Just so you don't think I've fallen in the river…  Still here but a non-stop week (two major projects concluded within 8 days of each other- sometimes this doesn't happen for one project in a year…  I'll explain sometime, economic development bringing companies to "La Wallonie")--

ANYway this weekend should be rainy and other than my eternal clean the garage project I should be able to get back to connecting my LaserWriter 12/640PS to my G4-733 running OS X 9.2.2 and hopefully resolve this.

If not, then I'll let you and others know - may have to request VOO to allocate that 192.168.0.123 address to my modem IF they can do that etc. etc.

More later today or tomorrow and thanks again,

    Best regards,
