>so all you apple lovers

Well, I take that an an insult, I'm here for free trying to help someone that has a problem with a Mac they have, and I happen to have experience with lots of problems with Apple's products, so one way to help insure you don't get much help is to sound like we have something to do with Apple or your Mac's problem, or are supposed to offer some defence of Apple, when we're often far more miffed than you with Apple. 😟

As Ronda says, the only 10.4 installer discs that will work an 800 Mhz iMac are the ones she lists. If there is a Mac model on it, or it says Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM on it, it will not work with that iMac. Furthermore, make sure the RAM installed is the minimum 256 MB. 128 MB will work, but is awful slow for 10.4. When the Mac in question was released 10.1.2 was the current operating system (a full 2 and half retail versions earlier). You have arrived at the right place to get help on finding information about older Macs. Just please keep an open mind on what does and doesn't work. Nothing wrong with getting an older Mac. You just need to be aware that normally it is best if you research what will work on it first before getting it, to be sure you get the right combination of things. Macs used to not be as compatible as they are today. In 2006, Apple made a major leap into the fray by switching to Intel CPUs allowing you to run Windows natively on them. This iMac G4 dates from 2002.

as already said here by others you cannot simply take the next best disc and believe your Mac will eat it. You need to purchase a SUITABLE OS for it. Because you have a PPC Mac ( G4 cpu ) you need the PowerPC version of Tiger. Grey Discs are for preloading, and work only on Macs they were made for just like those OEM disks that PC makers produce with Windows on it. You cannot use a Disc for a Toshiba on a Sony for example.

Also, I would recommend never to buy a used Mac which doesn't include the original system discs (Install and Restore) that came with it when it was new as well as any newer retail versions of discs for the operating system it's currently running.

I've bought over half a dozen Macs through eBay, keeping that hard and fast rule in mind. Sometimes you can even get one that still has AppleCare left on it. Three or four of mine did.

Buying Mac notebooks that have been used in schools is an iffy proposition. Kids may not treat a notebook lent to them by their schools very well (and schools rarely have the software discs available, either).

Careful buying can get you a great Mac, but you do have to do a lot of studying to know what you're getting.

Tell your little brother, "Better luck next time."
