Q: Duplicate songs on iPhone after iCloud download

After iCloud was introduced, I did this:

  • bought an album on iTunes via my Mac
  • downloaded the album to my iPhone via the iCloud service in the iPhone Music Store
  • Synced my iPhone with my Mac.

Now that new album is on my iPhone twice! Well, the album shows up once, but each song is in there 2 times.

If I un-check the album in iTunes and sync, it no longer shows as doubled, but now those songs won't play when I'm playing the album in iTunes (since iTunes skips un-checked songs).

How do I get the iCloud-downloaded songs OFF my iPhone??

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

I'm having the same problem.  I'm going to try a third party app called iPhoneBrowser to open my iPhone files and manually delete the entire music file off of my iPhone.  Your phone does not have to be jailbroken to use this software and you don't have to delete song by song just delete the entire file at once.  The only downside, depending on how you view it, is that iPhoneBrowser will automatically back up your deletions to a backup file on your computer.  Once all songs have been deleted from phone re-sync to iTunes and alas your iPhone music will match your iTunes library.  I hope this helps it seems like a better solution than resetting the phone to new.

Here is an update it worked perfectly and quick!!!!  But the above explanation was off in a couple of aspects but here is a list of what do:

    1.  Get iPhoneBrowser (Can be found for free on the net)

    2.  Plug iPhone into computer

    3.  Disable automatic backup on iPhoneBrowser unless you want to be extra safe and keep contents of phone if so don't disable.  However, not doing so will add an extra long step to this process as it will take a while to back up depending on the amount of content in your iTunes Control folder on your iPhone.

                Edit>Options>No Automatic Backup (this run)

    4.  Select iTunes_Control folder on the left and right click to delete the entire folder.

    5.  Turn off iPhone.  (Must do so to restore the shells of the deleted folders back on phone).

    6.  Open iTunes and once your phone has been recognized by iTunes select phone on left under Devices and ensure that under the music tab that you've selected Sync Music>Entire music library

    7.  Then begin ****Sync and your phone will match your library.

    8.  The whole process took less than 15 minutes and I had over 1300 songs on phone and over 1200 in library.

****Before syncing clean duplicates out of library which is fairly easy by selecting display duplicates and then proceed to clean by whatever method you choose as there are several ways to complete this task.  I choose to sort by date once I've displayed duplicates and then delete the duplicate files by the date and time the file was duplicated.

You don't need iPhone Browser. You can do it right from the phone.

Go to settings>general>usage and look at storage. It might take a while to come up. Tap on Music, then swipe across 'All music.' Again, this might take a little while, but when it is done, all your music will be gone.

Where were you earlier...lol.  Well thanks for that info :-).  I agree a much easier way!   Still there are other valuable uses of iPhoneBrowser.

If you guys are still having this problem, I think I have found the solution.

If the songs are not showing up as duplicates in iTunes, but are on your device, just delete it from the device by sideswipping it and pressing delete. When you sync your device, it doesn't re-sync back to your device, and you're left with only one file - the one you want.

Yeah - but who wants to delete song EVERY TIME they buy something from the iTunes store? I'm amazed Apple hasn't chimed in on this yet or offered a solution because this is really annoying.

I am having the same problem, and not up for these finicky complex solutions. Apple - is there a solution? I'm seeing double songs on my iPhone.

I alway get one album dupilicate Death Cab By Cutie's Codes And Keys but swiping the album and delete is a charm when ever I sync via USB

Exact same problem here. Months of this and Apple has yet to even acknowledge? C'mon...

I am having a similar issue except my duplicates are in a light gray font and cannot play.  The songs that are in black can play.  Has any one had this issue?

This also worked for me.  Thanks!

On a side note, I turned off Automatic Downloads on all my devices, including my Mac, before I used your solution.  Can I now safely turn Atuomatic Downloads back on or will that case the same duplication issue to reappear?

    1. Mac Mini

    2. Mac Air

    3. Mac Book

    4. Iphone 4

    5. Iphone 4s

    6. iPad2

    thats 4200 freaking deletes. if i need to do each device...  THIS IS _ _ _ _ _ _ _ UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then if the issue repeats on the nanos i have. if they didn't fill up first anther 3500.  and i dont recall filling out an apple music manger job application.

When you get it right you get it right - When you dont.  as I said OMG!!!!!

Need an actual solution not a song by song hack solution...

    oh.... Kind Regrads

    With respect to...

    3. Expand the menu and select what media you want to delete, such as Music;

What menu are you referring to and how is it accessed?

    In regard to...

Temporary turn off iCloud for Music - Setting > Store > and Automatic Download for Music OFF.

Since you mention "Temporary", did you turn this setting back ON after completing all other steps?
