Can't empty trash
When I attempt to empty my trash, it will not complete, but gives me an error code -8003.

Try doing a Finder Restart from Force Quit under the Apple menu. This works for me when the trash won't empty.
I've tried everything above (except cocktail, which will be next), to no avail. I even accidentally reinstalled OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
I cannot get the "Empty Securely" to show.
Did you move files from a Time Machine backup to the Trash?
Well, yeah. Was I bad?
You destroyed your Time Machine repository. Erase the TM volume and start over. As for emptying the Trash, you need root privileges to do that. You can do it in the shell (Terminal), or with an application called "TrashIt." Please read the TM documentation which clearly states that you should never touch the repository with the Finder.
Where do I find the Time Machine documentation?

That's a new one for me

Under the Help menu, search for "Time Machine."
Sorry I'm so dense; which Help Menu?
Rod
It would've been nice, if I'd had a warning screen.
which Help Menu?
The one in the menu bar. I agree that it shouldn't be so easy to make the mistake you made. It seems to be quite common.
Open the "Terminal" and type this: rm -rf ~/.Trash/* and hit <return>
You are now done. The trash should be empty and make sure to check "disk permissions" and "repair the disk" then restart the mac...
cheers! 🙂
