Burn mark on iPad 2?

I'm seeing burn mark on my iPad 2 and smart cover (magnetic strip). Both the markings' location matched exactly when the smart cover is attached to the iPad.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.2

It's not a burn mark. Other's have commented the smart cover can leave a line on the screen, but it's not permanent. Get yourself a good microfibre cloth and slightly damp (don't use any type of alcohol or ammonia cleaners) just use a nice gentle circular motion and the mark will go away. If you want a professional cleaning solution that is safe for your Oleophobic screen, go to Best Buy and iClean from Monster.

I know this is an old thread, but its one of the first that comes up on google when you search for this.

I can tell you quite certainly that this is not rust. I have identical damage to my ipad and am quite certain it is a burn mark. I have worked professionally on various electronics for over 10 years and have seen damage similar to this quite often. The key to identifying it as a burn over a rust stain is the accompanying damage present in the aluminum. There is very minor pitting present in the aluminum which you would not see if this was simply a stain.

Also on the smart cover, the magnet is covered in some sort of plastic. On my damage it is centered on this plastic strip and not near the edge.

I plan on taking my iPad to the Apple store as soon as I return home. This is not discoloration and it is not rust. This is a burn mark from either heat or arcing. It is possible the wifi antenna induces a small amount of current flow in the case and there is some sort of interaction with the magnet which causes it to arc (and ultimately burn) between the case and the magnet of the cover.

I see what you're referring to. It probably wouldn't bother me too much, but if it does bother you, make an appointment at your Apple Store Genius bar and let them take a look at it. I personally, took my smart cover off as I found it less effective than I had hoped. I wanted something that would permit the iPad to have a stand in either portrait or landscape and smart cover doesn't. I found a terrific option at Best buy that better protects the back and sides of my iPad and it rotates 360 degrees for more flexibility as a stand. It's a leather case from Tagus if you're interested in it.........
