using terminal to access ssh

For one of my college classes we are to use a programming language called SLAM II. I don't know anything about it. But my first roadblock has been accessing the U's SSH. I found some articles telling me to use terminal, because the "pretty little interface" is a .sea which is not supported these days. I was able to access the SSH through terminal. But I don't know how to upload/download files from there. I have never used a SSH. Help please! What should I be looking for? Is there a way to list/search files on the SSH?
