Apple has stopped development past iOS 4.2.1 for the 2G but they may adapt a special iOS 5 update as there are alot of new features but its unlikely, Sorry

No one would know such a thing, unless Apple announces.

Anyone that would know would not be able to tell ( non-disclosure agreement).

There is no reason to believe that there will be any new updates.

The 2nd generation ipod touch was discontinued in september 2010 (8 GB model). since it was released in september 2008, the unit is simply too slow to run many newer games that have been published since september 2010. also, this unit just doesn't have enough memory to handle running any newer versions of iOS. it simply just doesn't have the overall power needed to handle iOS 5. even so, when I upgraded to iOS 4.2, the battery drains much faster under iOS 4. the iPod Touch is designed to be replaced every 2-4 years, and as such, I would recommend for you to consider replacing it in the near future.

iOS 5 will also be compatible with the newest iPhone models being released later this year.

How did you update to iOS 4.2? Like kevin buick said, and my iTunes shows, it seems the software is up to date at 4.2.1
