How to close apps on my iPhone 3G

Hi guys,

I've been looking everywhere for this.

All I can get is people saying to press the home button twice.

But it DOES NOT WORK on my iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2.1.

So now it's slow, freezing occasionnaly et MAPS... my god... I can't use it anymore... I press a key (a letter) and it takes over 2 minutes for it to appear.

But anyway, could someone help me out ?

1) How to close apps on iPhone 3G ?

2) How to make it less slow ??

That does not mean the apps are open and running since very few 3rd party apps run in the background. The number of 3rd party apps that run in the background are very few and far between. For the most part overwhelmingly, this means the apps were recently used only.
