Hi Monique,

you do NOT need a program like Mackeeper! It is very difficult to clean uninstall it and it doesn't even have a uninstaller! It does more harm and no good at all.

Although this is for MacDefender, you can use it for MacKeeper also. Just replace the "macdefender" word with "mackeeper".

Unfortunately the instructions you were given are for the MacDefender Trojan malware and MacKeeper is a legitamate application which cannot be removed using those instructions.

According to MacKeeper Tech Support you can drag the application to the trash and it will ask you why you want to delete it then run the uninstaller which should remove most of these files:

In Application folder:

- /Applications/MacKeeper.app

In System Library:

- /Library/Application/Support/MacKeeper

- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.AntiVirus

- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon

In User Library: - /Users/~/Library/Caches/com.zeobit.MacKeeper

- /Users/~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper

- /Users/~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.Backup.agent

- /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist

- /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plist

where ~ is your username

In Keychain Access utility:

- all zeobit passwords

To Completely Uninstall and Remove Zeobit's MacKeeper

Download and Install AppCleaner

Download and Install Find Any File

Run AppCleaner

1. Click on Applications
2. Select MacKeeper
3. Click on Search
4. Select all results
5. Click on Delete

Run Find Any File

1. Search for zeobit
2. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)
3. Search for mackeeper
4. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)

Open Up Keychain Access

1. Search for zeobit
   
2. Select and Delete all results
3. Search for mackeeper
4. Select and Delete all results

Secure Empty Trash

Reboot

Unless you perform all of these steps, you'll have remnants of Zeobit's MacKeeper app. I had installed MacKeeper several weeks ago, when I had accidentally deleted some files on my Mac -- hoping to use their "undelete" feature. This was when my nightmare began. Even after using AppCleaner to remove it, there were still some background processes that were running every 10 seconds. While probably harmless, this adds unnnecessary strain on the Mac.

The key was also using Find Any File and delete any entries in the Keychain Access.

Hi Frank, very thorough ! good memo.

I want to include my experience with the uninstaller and finder you use:

Instead of Appcleaner, I use Appdelete: for complicated apps with a lot of entries it finds many more entries;

Instead of FindAnyFile, I use EasyFind: finds many more entries.

You should try them along with yours for a time and compare them.

Your experience matches mine here, but as I pointed out in another forum, it's not really necessary to use either if you are going to also use one of the search utilities. Both AppCleaner and AppDelete use similar search techniques but don't seem to look in all the right places, nor will they search for "zeobit" by itself.

Instead of FindAnyFile, I use EasyFind: finds many more entries.

In the many years that I have used both of these, I have never found that to be true. Easy find does have some advantages in being able to look internal to a file's content, for instance, but Find Any File can be made search as root and find things Easy Find will not. I also observe that Find Any File is usually slightly faster at producing results.
