Apostrophe handling

Hello,

I have some issues with the apostrophe handling in Pages for documents in French.

When I write " L'enfant " Pages shows the following apostrophe between L and enfant :

It should show the following :

The document is set up as French, so that doesn't help.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Pascal

You wrote that the document is set to French but which is the language used by Pages to display its menus.

When Pages is running in French, if we activate the feature "Utiliser les guillemets français" it inserts the correct apostrophe.

So,

(1) if Pages display French menus, what you get is not the normal behavior.

Try to clean the fonts cache files

Run FontBook (Livre des polices) to get rid of possible fonts conflicts.

(2) if Pages doesn't display French menus, disable the feature "Utiliser les guillemets français" and type the correct character by yourself.

I apologize but I don't remember the language for which Pages uses the curly character which you got.

On my French keyboard I get them with alt/option + shift + 4 ( ’ )

I'm surprised by what you wrote because the resource ruling the quotes behavior is the same for the single quotes in French and German.

Hi,

I have tried to switch MacOS to French (now I have all menus & stuff in French) and ..... it works ! Now apostrophes are correct.

But then I switched back to German and the problem came back. Really bizarre ... I consider this to be a bug in Pages. Anyway, apostrophe handling should not be dependent on your system language but on your document language ! This is a major difference developers in the US may not get, but for anyone living in a multilingual environment this is truly annoying.

Btw : In MS Word for Mac everything is fine. I assume Microsoft ignores system settings for this.

Thanks a lot for your help Yvan.

Pages '09 was designed before mac OS X 10.6

When we will get a new version, I guess that the app will use the system tool ruling quotes attributes. This way, if I understand well, we will have quotes linked to the document language.

When I bought my first iWork package, there was absolutely no setting available to rule the curly quote.

Every languages were given English ones.

I did a bit of surgery to get the French ones and filed numerous bug reports.

At last, in iWork '09, we got quotes according to the system setting.

So, be patient.

You may try to swap the two curly single quotes in the German resource.
