I recently purchased a new Denon integrated network AV receiver. I do not have a convenient way to directly connect the receiver to my LAN via an ethernet cable which it says it requires to use the airplay feature as well as internet radio, etc... My question is: i have an apple TV connected to the receiver, can I use the ethernet port on the apple tv as a "router" to my wireless network to perform the same function?

OK, i tried but I must not be configuring the AE correctly. It is connected to the AV receiver via an ethernet cable. I went through the airport setup and it recognized it in setup; however the receiver does not "see" a network connection. Any suggestions on the airport utility setup so that the receiver recognizes the LAN?
I have mine set up as a WDS remote, it does much the same as you want to do as it supplies the Internet to my sons PSP.
