May you explain exactly what you mean by "my document is not highlighted" ?

I thought that you were speaking of the behavior of the Open Dialog but I wonder if it's really that.

Here is the Open Dialog :

User uploaded file

One item is highlighted (in purple). It's the selected one.

Several items appear in black. They are those which Pages may open.

Some appear in gray. They are those which can't be open by Pages.

My understanding was that your documents appeared grayed.

Is it really that ?

Here is a way to get the System version :

User uploaded file

Click the first menu item in the Apple menu.

Here, the operating system version is 10.6.7

Now, a way to get the Application's version :

User uploaded file

Click the first menu item in the menu Pages.

Here the application's version is 4.0.5.

I'm not a sooth sayer so I can't guess if you bought Pages as a single app thru mac App Store or if you bought the entire iWork package.

From the mac App Store, you got Pages 4.0.5

In the iWork package, Pages is delivered in version 4.0 which must be updated thru Software Update (second menu item of Apple Menu).

To be the AW6 successor, iWork MUST integrate a TRUE DB, not a list organizer !

Here is the complete list of kinds of files which Pages may open.

User uploaded file

If your documents are grayed, I know two ways to explain that :

(1) they don't belong to the recognized files

(2) the list of recognized files was clobbered

In case 2, I hope that applying a maintenance tool like the free ONYX or its subset MAINTENANCE to :

repair permissions

rebuild LaunchServices databases

clean caches

may solve the problem.

Looking carefully at the posted list, you will see that there is a funny bug in Pages.

The engineers forgot to insert the pub format in the list of format which may be created by Pages from singlefiles.

Two explanations :

(1) the doc can't be selected in the Open dialog, because it's corrupted.

(2) it can't be selected because a database used by the system is corrupted.

(a) What if you drag the doc's icon on the application one ?

(b) What if you try to open it from an other user account ?

Which is the running operating system ?

Which is the Pages version in use ?

I was able to get to the document by dragging to the desktop. I don't understand how the document could get corrupted. Over half of my documents are not highlighted. The iMac is new, I have no idea what operating system it is or what Pages version it is. Should be the newest since we just purchased at the end of January this year. There is only one user account.

I am a Windows user converting to Apple and have such troubles trying to figure everything out. Everyone said it would be so easy and I am finding it extremely frustrating. I find myself going back and using my laptop more and more just because I can't understand the Apple.

Thank you. My system is version is 10.6.7 and I found the CD for iWorks that was purchased along with the system and it says version 9.0.3. Does that sound right? And yes, you are correct by the documents in gray, not black. That is what I meant by not highlighted. I am sorry but I am not that computer literate so do not know all the information you need. I am a PT working mom whose children wanted this computer because it is what they use in the school systems and it is supposed to have an awesome graphics ability. Since photography is my pt passion, it's what we went with. I have yet to put any of my photos on it because I can't figure anything out on it. I can't even figure out how to get my pics from my camera to the computer :-) Another day. Right now I need to get these docs figured out because that is my job. It did work to drag them, but am confused as to why they all have gone gray on me? It's just all extra steps to have to drag open and put into applications rather than leaving in Pages, etc. Thanks so much for all you help. BTW I am replying via my Windows because my email won't work on the darn Apple either :-) So happy....

As the package is version 9.0.3, upgrade is required.

Quit the applications keynote, Numbers & Pages then click the menu :

Apple > Software Update.

The app will scan your system to search which updates are required.

If you left the iWork applications where they were stored during the installation (Applicaztions : iWork '09 : Keynote, Numbers, Pages

Software Update will warn you that there is an available updater (9.0.5). Apply it.

Maybe it will warn also about other updaters available. As far as I know, all of them are useful.
