Voice Memos: one-sided telephone recording

I have the Verizon iPhone, version 4.2.8 (8E401), firmware 1.0.06, model MC678LL. For some reason, when I record a telephone call (I am a journalist and I do telephone interviews) the Voice Memo app has suddenly stopped recording the incoming voice, but my voice is still recorded. I use a Radio Shack device that plugs into the phone and then to the handset and has a plug that fits into the mic of most recording devices.

I checked the Radio Shack device with another recorder and it's fine, so the problem must be with the iPhone. The iPhone Voice Memo used to work just fine with the Radio Shack a couple of months ago. What gives?

Thanks for any help/insight. This has been driving me batty!

I am not sure why it has stopped working for you. I don't believe Voice Memo has gotten any updates lately. Did it work fine before with a AT&T iPhone and now doesn't with the Verizon iPhone? It wouldn't be a carrier issue I would assume but maybe a difference in the Voice Memo app on the different firmware's.

At any rate you could ditch the Radio Shack device and use Google Voice to record all of your calls. That's what I use and it works great. The only thing is that it announces to the other person that they are being recorded.

The Google Voice app and service are free. You just hit a number on the keypad during any call and it records both sides of that call.

JosiahW,

Thanks for your reply. I've never had an At&T iPhone, so that's not it. I called AppleCare and the tech said he'd never heard of this issue before, but that his best bet was that I needed to do a full, safe restore with extra backup. He was supposed to send me an email with directions how to do that, but I can't find it. I've been swamped at work, so didn't have time earlier to attend to this.

I love Google Voice and I use it a lot—my iPhone, home phone and work number all ring when anyone calls that number and all my voice mail to Google Voice or my iPhone goes to Google Voice. I love the "Listen In" feature.

My issue is that I need a recording device to use for incoming/outgoing calls from my work phone specifically for interviews - I'm a journalist/writer/editor and I frequently need to conduct telephone interviews for later transcription. The iPhone is so simple to use and handy that I would prefer to use it than my older Olympus recorder. I've downloaded several cool recording apps that have some better features than Voice Memo, but none of them will record an incoming voice, either.

Just for its simplicity--it has one-touch recording, unlike Voice Memo--I like QuickVoice Pro. It also will email you a transcribed version of your recordings! Only drawback is that it doesn't seem to be able to draw from your contacts for email addys.

Anyhow, more than you wanted to know.

I am going to give Google Voice a whirl for recording interviews. I think that it would work from my work phone, as long as I have Google Voice make the call? The added benefit would be having a transcribed version of the interview ready-made!

Thanks!

Just found out that Google Voice does not record outbound calls, and the calls have to be made to your Google Voice number, which wouldn't work for me even if one of my interviewees called me because I use my work phone to make and receive calls at work. If someone calls me on my Google Voice number, my work phone will ring and I can send the caller to Google Voice Mail, but that's a different function than recording incoming calls by pressing the 4 button.

"Note: at this time you can only record calls you receive on your Google Voice number. You can't record calls you initiate using our Click2Call from our website or the Return Call feature from your voicemail."

If you search for "recording calls" in help, you can get to this page: http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=115121 which says Google Voice doesn't currently allow recording outbound calls, but if you'd like this feature there's a link to make a suggestion. Cool! Google is actively asking for people to request the feature!

I have always heard that you could only recode onsided conversation with voice memo so I'm interested to learn more about this thread.

I did know that there were some apps which announced to the caller on the other end that a conversation was being recorded. If I'm just using it to record transcripts notes I feel its intrusive to have announcement.

I know too that there are web services which you can dial in and record conversations, but this seems cumbersome and it is also a pay service. I should be able to do this on phone and easily

I believe that it is true that you can only record one side (your side) of a conversation from within the Voice Memo or most other apps. There is one app that I know of that will record two-sided conversations for a fee. It's called iPhone Recorder by Retronyms. Here's the link to their web page: http://www.recordertheapp.com/ It seems pretty cool and the fee is not too expensive if your recorded phone calls aren't too long.

You can turn on or off an announcement that informs the callee that he/she is being recorded. However, I don't think it works on incoming calls, just outgoing.

My issue was just in using my lovely iPhone as a recording device via a landline phone hooked up to a Radio Shack recording device.

Cheers!
