Q: Maximum monitor resolution for GeForce 6600

I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with a Nvidia GeForce 6600 graphics card with 256 MB VRAM. I currently am using a 1280 x 1024 LCD display. I will be upgrading the computer and display in the near future and was wondering what is the maximum resolution monitor that would be compatible with this graphics card? It would be useful information so I don't upgrade the monitor first and find it won't work with the card.

Thanks.

If you open Displays preferences and click on Detect Displays then the maximum resolution shown should be the maximum resolution supported by the display.

The Nvidia GeForce 6600 Supported Resolutions are:

    1280x960,

    1920x1200,

    1920x1440,

    QXGA (2048x1536),

    XGA (1024x768),

    SVGA (800x600),

    SXGAW (1600x1024),

    SXGA (1280x1024),

    VGA (640x480),

    UXGA (1600x1200),

    HDTV (1920x1080),

    1152x864

So for your monitor the maximum resolution this graphics card can put out is 1920x 1440.

Kappy: The Displays preference shows a list of resolutions topping out at 1280 x 1024, which is the resolution of the current display that is connected.

JosiahW: thanks for the list - I couldn't seem to find it.

Although the included list is nice, it is incomplete and doesn't address the capabilities of the dual link DVI port that ALL Geforce 6600 (OEM) cards have.

I suspect the list is for a PC version of the 6600.

The Apple Geforce 6600 (128 MB or 256 MB) has one single link DVI and one dual link DVI.

As such, the specs for the card are:

    -Support for digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels;

dual-link DVI ports support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels

-Support for analog resolutions up to 2048 by 1536 pixels

Thanks for the update. I am connecting just one monitor but it's good to know the additional information.

I know this is by now totally obsolete for most people, but may be still worth noting. We just tested an LG 29" ultra-wide monitor on a G5 with 256Mb Geforce 6600 and can confirm its native resolution of 2560x1080 is fully supported. Works beautifully.
