How necessary is Java?

Doing a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.4.11, I realized that the Java updates -- seven of them, which must be tediously installed one by one in order -- are more than all the other 10.4 updates combined: 432MB (Java) vs. 386MB (10.4.11 Combo, QuickTime, the final Security Update, Safari). And I started to wonder: do I need it? I've never understood quite what this Java stuff does. Can anyone elucidate? What will I be missing if I don't install all these Java updates?

Java is necessary for using many websites or features of the websites. Java is widely used in web development. It may be unused for your typical needs unless you have applications written in Java.
