my trackpad is malfunctioning (out of applecare and don't have the money to get it repaired, otherwise, my machine works fine), so i can't use it when i want to use disc utility (for routine maintenance) from my original install disc.
are there keyboard shortcuts that will get me from the install screen thru to the disk utility functions: varifying and repairing permissions and disks?

There's no way you're going to effectively use OS X without a pointing device. It isn't designed to be mouseless.
I don't know what your budget is, but I would assume getting the trackpad repaired would be a lot more than the $70 for a Magic Trackpad.
And, if your Macbook is so old that it doesn't have multi-finger gestures, the Magic Trackpad is very nice.

i have a trackball, but it won't work when i boot from the original install disc (because, of course, the mouseworks driver isn't on the original mac os install disc.) i'd thought to make a custom bootup disc with mouseworks installed, but i don't know if it's possible.
If you can borrow a usb mouse to get it going, I would think you could install on an external drive, add the mouseworks drivers, and then use that external drive as your recovery boot disk.
I think if you google you might find instructions for creating a boot disk on an 8 or 16GB USB stick.
i'll give that i try.
