I want my background (a movie) to show only through my Title. I know how to make the text transparent, but can't figure out how to make the part of the text layer outside the text opaque, like a mask. Any ideas? Also, what is this part of the image called, anyway?

Select the text. Go to Attributes>Matte and choose Background in the popup.

So this didn't work. The non-text area is still translucent. Now it's just showing my movie and no text. I think that I have to insert a layer of black in-between the text and the background movie. if anyone knows how to do this easily, please let me know!

export your title to FCP... Layout as I've indicated below:
V2 (Movie to be masked) (right-click > Composite Mode > Travel Alpha)
V1 (LiveType Title)

thanks! I finally figured out how to put a layer of black in my livetype file by exporting 20 minutes of nothing. but if I have problems, i'll do it your way. thank you!
