    1.  Review Roger Wilmut's excellent series of articles - Abandoning Appleworks:

    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html

    2.  For continued use of Appleworks 6.2.9 in Lion or Mt. Lion, install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8:

Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).

    3.  For System 9, consider using the SheepShaver emulator on a modern Mac.

Here is a recent post I assembled on that topic:

With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.

A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

    More information on SheepShaver:

Thanks Michael and Stephen for the advice. Wish I knew more about computers. But of course that's why I've always used macs, so I didn't have to learn how they worked, I could just use them for work.

Somehow I've been able to upgrade my Quicken to a version that they say will be compatible with lion. My Quicken was really old since I had never seen anything in new versions that looked as if it was worth the price.

I had to get 2 versions of quicken to do it and I had to ignore the advice of the "expert" at Intuit who told me to just re-enter my checks (25,000 of them!).

I would have bought a new computer long ago if not for all these "rosetta-less" problems. But I guess Apple is in the phone business now...

Yes, Intuit released Quicken 2007 for Lion (then Mt. Lion) in March 2012 for download for $15.

Which version are you using?  I stay at 16.1.2 as 16.1.3 crashed on launch for me and there have been reports of problems by others.

I did not accept the 16.1.4 upgrade either, so I have no experience with it yet.

    Yes, Quicken 2007.

    16.1.2  I don't trust their upgrades....

Pardon my ignorance but, what is "Parallels 8?"

Oh, wait, I got it - a Windows emulator!

And, if SheepShaver or Chubby Bunny allows one to run OS9, couldn't I just run AppleWorks in OS9?

Thanks for the wealth of info on other alternatives.

John, I recently leapfrogged from a PowerPC G5 running OS 10.4.11 Tiger (and, of course, Classic!) to Mountain Lion on a brand new Intel MacBookPro and will try to summarize how it went/a few observations.

    - Quicken 2007 for Lion, version 16.1.4 is running like a charm as I accepted all upgrades.

    - I used MacLinkPlus to convert most of the old AW files.  When formatting didn't matter, I converted the WP files to text.  I converted the spreadsheets to Excel and the database files to Tab Separated which I have since opened in FileMaker Pro.  I had no problems with FM since I have been a user of FM since their first version over 30 years ago.  I tried Bento and found it a waste of time.

    - Pages does a pretty good job of opening and saving AW 6.2.9 WP files

    - For AW Draw documents, you might want to try EasyDraw.  I bought it and it opens some AW Draw documents well, some not so well, and some not at all.

-Of all the info above, I find the running of OS9 to be my most interesting.  I had/have over 15 years of financial information on a wonderful old program known as Andrew Tobias's Managing Your Money.

Yes, Bento is pretty worthless. I was new to FM, having spent 25+ years on AW Databases. I feel like there is a lot more to the program than I am taking advantage of. But it does what I needed...

As for converting the wp files via mac link plus.....I tried to convert the old aw files to aw6. since it would not do that I was opening them in aw6 and then saving them as aw6 wp files since pages will open those. Of course you just saved me many hours of work, (sadly after I had wasted many more hours with my stupid procedure). I had about 30,000 to do. I have about 8,000 left which, thanks to you, I'll probably do tonight....

Guess I should spend more time here.

    But, THANK YOU!

It depends upon which version of Appleworks you need to run; you can actually run the Apple //e version in the Virtual ][ emulator

AppleWriter goes way back!  It's probably around here somewhere but I would be running AppleWorks 6.2.9, if at all.  I'm so far into converting now that I probably won't.

Appleworks 6.2.9 runs in Snow Leopard with Rosetta, as indicated in my earlier post.  No need to emulate OS 9.

That's AppleWorks 3.0 running in Virtual ][ on my 2011 Mac Mini in Lion.  I mistakenly posted AppleWriter running in emulation and corrected the post.

I'm running Mountain Lion - not Snow Leopard.

I think the idea is that you can load 10.6 into the Parallels 8 environment running on 10.8. Since 10.6 runs Rosetta, you'll be able to run AW.

In the future, rather than reopen a stale thread to ask on off-topic question, just open a new thread.

To answer your question, I just downloaded the 14 day trial version of Parallels 9 and it opens my Snow Leopard Server.pvm virtual just fine:
