Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Not sure if you're replying to me or not, but I was the last post, so I'm guessing you are.

I already applied the patch as described in that link, and while it reduced the number of crashes I receive, it did not *completely* resolve the problem. I just had a crash tonight w/ the stack trace I posted in my previous message.

Apple still has not addressed this issue completely. I have AppleCare so I'm not too worried, but I'm not looking forward to dealing with it.

Thanks ianamortel! Yes it does help, thank you very much for replying back.

Okay so I am guessing that while you played AC2 on Lion, the GPU must have heated up quite a bit and you still didn't have any problems. That is GOOD NEWS because according to this article from CNET a heat issue could have been another cause for the blackout.

I have 2 more questions. If you or others could please care to comment: Do you/anyone have Windows on BootCamp? Did you experience any BSOD's while booted into Windows?

Thanks once again!

Welcome to the party Ashhab21, we're all in the same situation as you. Fortunately, there are two things you can do now:

1. Quick Fix: Install gfxCardStatus. It's an application that enables you to switch between your faulty discrete graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 330M) and your less-powerful integrated one (Intel HD Graphics). As you may or may not have noticed, the issue you are experiencing is being caused by your Nvidia Card, and that's the reason it only arouses when you're using software that tells your OS to switch to the more powerful GPU (or when your laptop comes back from sleep). With gfxCardStatus, you can disable your Nvidia card by selecting Integrated Only from the icon in the menubar, and the problem will most likely be gone. As long as you stick with the Intel card, of course.

2. Apple's Fix: Apple has very recently acknowledged and provided an update that supposedly fixes this issue. You can find more info here. However, note that the update will only work for you if you're running Lion. If not, you should take your MBP back to the Apple service in your country and refer them to the link I posted above.

Personally, Apple's update has significantly reduced the occurrences of the issue in my MBP, but has definitely not solved the problem. I've already had two of these blackouts in the past three days, the last one being about five minutes ago, erasing what I had written of this post when it was half way done.

My MBP 15" is under a 2 year AppleCare warranty and HK$4489.00 was the cost charged for logic board replacement on the work sheet but the payable amount was $0.00. As I understand they will replace the board free of charge, regardless of warranty if you are experiencing the issue discussed in this thread and they confirm your machine has this specific problem.

Apple has conceded there is a fault with a batch of 15" MBPs (mid 2010). Show this Apple knowledge-base article at the Genius Bar:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

It states in this article, if your machine has the fault they will replace the logic board within two years of purchase.

Nov 20, 2011 4:30 PM in response to Feynmanfan

I have had the same issue for the last few months with my 2010 MBP 15" i7 2.6 HR glossy (purchased in june2010). Comouter would freeze often When GPU was taxed. Any extended photoshop use would cause the blank screen freezing issue, as would doing many tasks when running windows 7 in bootcamp. But it would also happen randomly in many other tasks. Resetting nvram, running hardware tests all were useless. Even replaced ram and hard drive with no luck. I originally thought I was stuck with a lemon and was going to be out of luck.

After finding this forum and the link to Apple finally owning up to the problem...

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4086

... I scheduled a genius bar appointment. I had crash logs saved off and a copy of the above article printed out. The genius was unaware of the issue, but luckily for me the computer failed the video test. They are replacing the logic board free of charge. (note I do not have apple care.... Coverage for this issue is covered for at least 2 years from date of purchase according to the article. )

Hopefully this takes care of the issue. (I have heard some people stating they've had to replace it twice before they had their issue resolved.) Thanks to everyone for raising this issue up to Apple!

Hi,

here is what I did and (for now) it seems to be working, but I am not sure 100%, anyway here is the method:

- Premise -

Last october Apple released a patch for both Lion and Snow Leopard to fix NVRAM Kernel Panic, here are the links to download it again from apple support site:

For Lion users: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469

For Snow Leopard users: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1475

- "Fix" -

So my method to fix the NVRAM kernel panic problem is to REINSTALL THAT PATCH EVERYTIME THERE IS A NEW OS X UPDATE and this seems to make my Mac Book Pro 15" mid-2010 working fine, so probably the problem is related to the standard OS X driver, but again I am not sure 100%.

Please Note: If you want Apple to exchange your laptop or your laptop's board then don't try this method 'cause Apple's support will need first to replicate the problem on your laptop and this "fix" may make them unable to reproduce it!

Hope this will help, cheers!

Apr 15, 2012 10:53 AM in response to apple242

I don't know.

I have apple care for 3 years, I shown the problem to technical support showing logs that I saved.

First time, technical support detected a problem with HD, but I said that it is't problem and explained what happen with my MB and shown this topic: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US and this discussion.

Technical support contacted the US support, explaining the problem without made tests, and because I have apple care apple replace my logic board without cost and without question me.

I'm living in Brazil, technical support isn't a apple store or genius, just a technical store authorized by Apple, They needs contact US to make some replace.

So Apple solved my problem and now my MB is working fine.

May 17, 2012 9:05 AM in response to CodeNemo

the problem seems to be in the graphic card driver

http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/08/04/2118220/os-x-lion-ships-with-faulty-nvi dia-drivers

"Apple OS X Lion shipped with new NVidia video drivers that are causing anyone with a mid 2010 Macbook Pro to get a kernel panic every 5-10 minutes. Apple knew about the issue before shipping lion, hasn't responded to the issue, and is censoring posts in their support forum that mention words like 'boycott' and 'petition.' NVidia has responded that the drivers are the responsibility of Apple so they won't deal with the issue. How a major hardware manufacturer can ship such a faulty product without getting much press about it is completely beyond me."

Jun 1, 2012 9:22 PM in response to apple242

Hi again CodeNemo and apple242,

CodeNemo...is this logic board replacement for a MBP 15" Mid 2010 or a 17" Mid 2010?

apple242...is logic-board 661-6362 for both a MBP 15" Mid 2010 and 17" Mid 2010?

FYI...the MBP Video Update 1.0 @ http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469 is only for the 15". I tried to load it only my 17" and it failed to proceed.

Thanks for the updates and I hope your problem is fixed soon, CodeNemo.

Hi,

I got my MBP yesterday, They were quick considering that all HW is coming from the Nederlands.

I fully tested at home and it seems to work. It was the Logic boardthen, as we all know from the beginning :-)

@Angelxaces: if you have the computer and problem described here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 they

have to replace the faulty part! In my case the first time I went there they did a test and no failure appeared. When I went there again showing this TS4088 and letting the MBP freezing in front of them they did an "extended" Apple test (no idea about the difference) where the logic board failure appeared!

Of course the MBP must be less than 2 years old.

Cheers
