Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Hey there!

Got the same problem here. Yesterday my MBP 17" crashed 5 times in 15 minutes. Any news from apple about this ? After resetting PRAM and NVRAM it works a bit longer, but this didn't help me to stop the panic's 😟

Without a receipt (was given MBP 17' as a gift) it has taken a while to get anywhere. I knew where the MBP was bought and the week bought and it was registered with Apple. Initially they wished to charge me AED.1800 (USD 500) for a new motherboard. After invoking my human rights and being stroppy - by way of council customer rights and presenting them with an invoice for wasting my time, they finally agreed to repair under warranty. Let's hope replacing the motherboard will do the trick, as it is going to take over two weeks to await replacement motheboard and carry out the repair.

I'll update when the computer returns .....

Apple are quickly becoming a company to hate, with human rights abuses in their factories, tax 'avoidance' on a massive scale, doing little in terms of warning and solving the trojan attacks and selling faultly products with little regard for the customer once sold.

Apple let's get things sorted and quickly. A return to basic principles would be a nice start: integrated systems that work together, some customer service and some corporate responsibility.

Apr 15, 2012 10:35 AM in response to sidneivl

Apple will not replace the logic board unless their 'test' fails.

And in Europe, in particular, Germany, in particular Heildeberg, Apple has a disorderly band of incompetent

buffons who know not their rear end from their thinking end, much less their Technical Bulletins and the tests

they are supposed to run.

Consequently months after taking the laptop in, the logic board has not been replaced.

Consequently we replaced all of our Apple laptops with another manufacturer's laptops.

Apr 15, 2012 11:25 AM in response to apple242

So, the problem is your country rules and apple care, not apple 🙂

Apple is a good company and have awesome products, but have this tips in your mind.

1 - Never buy anything that Apple release in the first 3 months, like ipad 3, because always some piece have problem.

2 - Every time that you buy a apple product buy apple care, it's not expensive and it is a good deal.

I hate windows and never come back to windows machine and I think linux complicated to work every day, so OSX for me is perfect OS and apple gadgets works fine, when got problem apple always solve my problem faster.

Apr 19, 2012 3:29 AM in response to apple242

You have my empathy apple242 and all. I'm about to take my matter to the Genius here in Chatswood NSW Australia to see if I can get my MBP 17" logic board replaced way after the expiry of the local 12 month's mandatory warranty applicable here.

Consumer Protection in Australia works like this: Despite being out of Warranty, Apple "knowingly" sold me a defective product back in August 2010 since this issue was extremely well publicised at that time and it is an acknowledged hardware issue (by many replacements done that resolves the matter). So we'll see if this works to fix this MBP. I would be surprised if it doesn't.

The background is that I bought this MBP for my lovely wife as she was growing to hate the issues we had with our other laptop (not an MBP). She is not a power user. My eldest son took to it like a duck to water and loves it. He has never encountered the issue and uses it a word processor and browser. My story is not good as I had bought the MBP to edit and create my own videos...

After my return from an Antarctic Circle adventure in February 2012, I started cutting my movie of this using iMovie and iPhoto. Once or twice, the panic occurred that required the master power reset to recover. Fortunately, not a frame of my video was lost. So I created a 1080p 16 minute movie that has since been shown to hundreds but not through the MBP. Using Quicktime via mirrored displays to a HDMI projector or TV induced this panic 50% of the time. Then I started investigating and found this thread to be the best.

Now the very sad fact is that I can only reliably present this popular 16 minute video using my work laptop or my aging Dell 17" XP-Pro laptop. To delight customers, Apple should identify from their records all customers whose defective logic-board meets the profile and offer to replace this free-of-charge regardless of the MBP laptop's age. That would restore my faith in Apple that has been shot to pieces reading about all your experiences via this thread.

Apr 19, 2012 7:14 PM in response to sidneivl

Thanks sidneivl!

I have seen this acknowledgement by Apple and the suggested fix with additional information. However, I find the first statement by Apple "...that a small number of MacBook Pro..." are affected is way off the true mark. Potentially, every MBP of this Mid 2010 generation is affected and that is millions.

Given this potential fix and me being a relative MBP ignoramous in comparison to others, my initial conclusion is based on caution rather than expert MBP technical knowledge. Thus, I conclude:

"TS4088" scope is for MBP 15" Mid 2010 while mine is a MBP 17" Mid 2010. Is everything logic-board and NVidia graphics-wise identical in both the 15" MBP and 17" MBP? If it is, then I can apply this patch as the second option before consulting the Genius as my third and hopefully final option.

The first option I'm experimenting with is very simple:

>>Open SYSTEM PREFERENCES>>Click ENERGY SAVER>> UNCHECK "AUTOMATIC GRAPHICS SWITCHING" -- REBOOT

So far given option 1, Quicktime survives playing the 16 minute video several times without an external display which is a "first" since the end of February when 50% of Quicktime plays caused a panic. But it was also a cooler evening than the usual February/March here. I need to retest with a 60" Samsung 3D HDTV which previously caused a panic 100% time. As this panic-inducing HDTV is at my Mother-in-Law's place, it'll be about 10-days before I can report my first option results with confidence, particularly as I haven't ruled-out high GPU temperature as a factor. Thus, having confidence in one's results and conclusions is important...

After trolling through these threads, many "solutions" have subsequently failed many times. Even early logic-board replacement failed. But I would hypothesise that there's no sense in replacing a Mid 2010 logic board with another Mid 2010 logic board when potentially a flawed design, faulty batch component or timely manufacturing error is the root cause.

One hall-mark symptom of the logic-board problem is that the panics never go away. Panics might retire for a few days but ultimately return. Logic-board replacement in the early days of this thread ultimately failed too, but later replacements, particularly from mid 2011 more often succeeded. So there's probably a hardware generational factor at play here. Usage patterns causing high GPU temperature is another factor which also help to induce this panic.

To demostrate this factor; I've turned-off the mosaic Screen-Saver after a very embarrassing presentation that was delayed by 30mins when this SS was running. The MBP was very hot when I started the presentation. It projected onto a wall-size HD screen generating great oo's and arr's (it's really spectacular in HD!). Within 5 mins a panic occurred freezing the screen to the degree that it was several minutes before the MBP would reboot successfully. On attempted reboot, I had "freezing" symptoms of no screen, white screens, boot-cycles and partial reboots. Clearly, these are all symptoms of a really sick MBP that took place in front of a 50-person audience...finally after a rest, the MBP recovered and rebooted OK allowing the presentation to conclude. This is not a good advertisement for Apple, I'm afraid. Probably 50-people walked away from my presentation vowing never to buy a MBP soon as a result of this. If it went off flawlessly, there would be 50 supporters instead!

My last point about this problem that is echoed many times in these threads is Apple's lack of proactive response. It makes no sense to me given that nearly every panic is sent to Apple by the user when the MBP finally boots-up OK on the internet. Apple should have data about this panic bordering on millions of instances of exactly the same panic. I fail to see why there was no response or acknowledgement sooner. I think we all agree that we should have got much better service from the one of the World's most profitable enterprises that has such an envious reputation that is being eroded by cases like this...I've made my point and I won't harp any further but will focus on positive action instead.

May 17, 2012 12:46 AM in response to apple242

Same in Darmstadt! They are absolutely incompetent! Their solution for the problem was a "clean install" of Lion (HW test negative).

I had already tried this solution by myself before bringing the computer and I even told them! They just did not care and got money for this useless service!

I probably give a last try at the Apple store in Frankfurt before downgrading to Snow Leopard.

May 17, 2012 5:13 AM in response to CodeNemo

Hi CodeNemo & apple242,

apple242's post that I received by email is not in this Discussion...wierd.

Anyhow, I've been running my MBP 17" with the gfxCardStatus app switched to Intel graphics since about my last post above with no panics or problems whatsoever. Switch back to the Nvidia 330M either for the LCD or external monitor then within a few minutes, PANIC!. So I'm taking this to the genius here when my son has a holiday away from Uni-work on the MBP. I'll report that back here when I have a result.

May 17, 2012 7:29 AM in response to bikegreeny

Hi bikegreeny,

thanks for your tip.

I also downloaded and tried gfxCardStatus with "integrated only". It did not work. I got the same: black screen, mbp frozen. Only solution hard reset with button.

I have the same issue.... HOWEVER my Imac does not crash unless i play a video game like diablo, warcraft, league of legends, etc.....

Does this mean i need a new board still? how can it crash with only games? It hasnt crashed with anything else so far.
